Warsaw (village), New York

Warsaw is a village located in Wyoming County, New York in the USA. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 3,814. It is the county seat of Wyoming County and lies inside the Town of Warsaw. The village and the town may be named after Warsaw in Poland.

The Village of Warsaw was incorporated in 1843.

The Perry-Warsaw Municipal Airport (01G), is a general aviation airport, located east of the village on Route 20A.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 10.7 km² (4.1 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

The Oatka Creek flows northward through the village, which is located in the Wyoming Valley.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,814 people, 1,484 households, and 887 families residing in the village. The population density is 357.4/km² (924.9/mi²). There are 1,575 housing units at an average density of 147.6/km² (381.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.96% White, 0.52% Black or African American, 0.39% Native American, 1.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 0.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,484 households out of which 32.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.2% are non-families. 34.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the village the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 85.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $35,592, and the median income for a family is $42,540. Males have a median income of $33,682 versus $21,540 for females. The per capita income for the village is $17,483. 11.0% of the population and 9.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.2% of those under the age of 18 and 8.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
