Walpole is a town located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 22,824.

History

Walpole was first settled in 1659 and was officially incorporated in 1724. The town was named after Sir Robert Walpole.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 54.4 km² (21.0 mi²). 53.2 km² (20.5 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.19% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 22,824 people, 8,060 households, and 5,972 families residing in the town. The population density is 429.0/km² (1,111.2/mi²). There are 8,229 housing units at an average density of 154.7/km² (400.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.41% White, 1.59% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 1.13% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.12% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. 2.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,060 households out of which 35.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.9% are non-families. 22.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.23.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $74,757, and the median income for a family is $84,458. Males have a median income of $54,243 versus $39,516 for females. The per capita income for the town is $32,117. 2.2% of the population and 1.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.8% of those under the age of 18 and 4.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Education

As of the 2000 census there were six public schools in Walpole: Walpole High School, Bird Middle School, Old Post Road School, Boyden School, Fisher School, and Johnson Middle School.
