Waddington (town), New York

Waddington is a town located in St. Lawrence County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,212. The town was named after its principal village.

History

The first settlement occurred in 1797. The town was formed in 1859 from the Town of Madrid.

Geography

The St. Lawrence River defines the north town line, which is the international border between the United States and Canada.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 150.2 km² (58.0 mi²). 133.5 km² (51.5 mi²) of it is land and 16.7 km² (6.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 11.11% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,212 people, 886 households, and 612 families residing in the town. The population density is 16.6/km² (42.9/mi²). There are 1,035 housing units at an average density of 7.8/km² (20.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.46% White, 0.18% Black or African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. 0.27% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 886 households out of which 29.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.9% are non-families. 24.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $35,952, and the median income for a family is $42,357. Males have a median income of $30,547 versus $22,135 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,311. 11.2% of the population and 5.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.5% of those under the age of 18 and 8.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Sucker Brook -- A stream that enters the St. Lawrence River near Waddington village.
  • Waddington -- The Village of Waddington in the northern part of the town.
  • Wagner Corners -- A hamlet west of Chipman, near the west town line on Route 31.
  • Whitehouse Bay -- A bay of the St. Lawrence River.
