Veteran is a town located in Chemung County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,271.

History

The first settler was Green Bently, a veteran of the Revolution. The Town of Veteran was formed in 1823 from the Town of Catharine, which became part of Schuyler County, New York.

Geography

The north town line is the border of Schuyler County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 99.7 km² (38.5 mi²). 99.5 km² (38.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.13% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,271 people, 1,261 households, and 948 families residing in the town. The population density is 32.9/km² (85.1/mi²). There are 1,331 housing units at an average density of 13.4/km² (34.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.98% White, 0.43% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,261 households out of which 32.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.0% are married couples living together, 8.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.8% are non-families. 20.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 98.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $44,521, and the median income for a family is $50,972. Males have a median income of $31,490 versus $26,027 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,522. 10.6% of the population and 6.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.9% of those under the age of 18 and 2.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Midway -- A hamlet south of Millport on Route 14 and Catherine Creek.
  • Millport, New York -- The Village of Millport is in the northwest part of the town on Catherine Creek and Route 14. It was once called Millvale.
  • Pine Valley -- A hamlet on the west town line.
  • Rush Run -- A hamlet in the eastern part of the town on Route 13.
  • Slabtown -- Part of the hamlet of Slabtown is within the south town line.
  • Sullivanville -- A hamlet northeast of Slabtown in the south part of the town on Route 13. It was formerly called Deans Corners.
