Vernon Township, New Jersey

Vernon Township is a township located in Sussex County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 24,686.

Vernon is the home to Mountain Creek Resort and Amusement Park as well as Legends Resort. 2002 Olympic Silver Medalist for Snowboarding, Danny Kass grew up and attended school in Vernon. Vernon is also the home of many lakes and lake communities including... Highland Lakes, Barry Lakes, Cliffwood Lake, Wawayanda Lake, Lake Wallkill, Vernon Valley Lake, Lake Panorama, Pleasant Valley Lake, and Scenic Lake. Canistear Reservoir on Canistear Road supplies the City of Newark with most of its water.

Vernon is bordered by Hardyston, Sussex, Wantage, and Hamburg all within Sussex County. Vernon borders Orange County, New York in Warwick via Route 94. Also Vernon shares a border with Passaic County in West Milford on Canistear Road giving easy access to Route 23.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 182.7 km² (70.5 mi²). 177.1 km² (68.4 mi²) of it is land and 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.03% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 24,686 people, 8,368 households, and 6,610 families residing in the township. The population density is 139.4/km² (360.9/mi²). There are 9,994 housing units at an average density of 56.4/km² (146.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 96.56% White, 0.76% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.79% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 3.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,368 households out of which 45.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.1% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.0% are non-families. 16.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.95 and the average family size is 3.35.

In the township the population is spread out with 30.6% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 32.9% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 6.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 102.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.0 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $67,566, and the median income for a family is $72,609. Males have a median income of $50,084 versus $33,292 for females. The per capita income for the township is $25,250. 2.9% of the population and 2.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.0% of those under the age of 18 and 3.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
