Vandalia, Ohio

Vandalia is a suburb of Dayton located in Montgomery County, Ohio. It is the location of the James M. Cox Dayton International Airport. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 14,603.

Vandalia is 10 miles north of Dayton on Dixie Drive. It is between the Great Miami River and the Stillwater River. The city has been called the "Crossroads of America" due to its location on the National Road and the Dixie Highway. These correspond to U.S. Highway 40 and the now decommissioned U.S. Highway 25.

Currently, Interstate 70 and Interstate 75 are Vandalia's most important highways. The cloverleaf interchange is currently undergoing reconstruction until 2008. Three of the four left turns are being reconstructed as ramps or tunnels in place of right 270° turns.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 30.8 km² (11.9 mi²). 30.6 km² (11.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.59% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 14,603 people, 6,235 households, and 4,090 families residing in the city. The population density is 477.4/km² (1,236.5/mi²). There are 6,489 housing units at an average density of 212.1/km² (549.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.08% White, 1.28% African American, 0.13% Native American, 1.23% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,235 households out of which 30.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.0% are married couples living together, 10.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.4% are non-families. 29.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $44,463, and the median income for a family is $55,270. Males have a median income of $41,938 versus $26,853 for females. The per capita income for the city is $24,199. 5.2% of the population and 3.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.2% of those under the age of 18 and 5.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
