Hello. Thanks for your comments on New Imperialism. 172 14:31, 3 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Hello there, welcome to the 'pedia! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. If you need pointers on how we title pages visit Wikipedia:Naming conventions or how to format them visit our manual of style. If you have any other questions about the project then check out Wikipedia:Help or add a question to the Village pump. Cheers! --maveric149

In response to your message on my page: the beauty of Wikipedia is that if the person who created a meaningless "Yay for dinosaurs!" page wants to come back and write a real article, they still can. In the meantime, by deleting that three-word not even a stub article, I've ensured that if someone is writing about dinosaurs, or recent events, and creates a link to that species, they'll see that there is no article, and may write one. From the viewpoint of the reader, "yay for dinosaurs" isn't information about the subject. Vicki Rosenzweig

You have listed your user page on Personal subpages to be deleted but I see it has changed since then. Do you still want it deleted? Angela 20:10, 17 Aug 2003 (UTC)

  • Ok, I have taken the request off the page. Angela

Regarding the architecture page, I was merely trying to organize the page in some way that was not the confusing form that I found it. I think if you look at the page history you will see that it was just a long list of links; it says at the top of the page that it is organizing the list into different categories, but there are no categories; that seems illogical to me, not politically incorrect. I do not think this is a NPOV question, it is just a question of coming up with a set of categories; I think you are being oversensitive, it is not an article, just a list of articles to help people find things. I have no special expertise in the architecture area, I only ended up there because I was trying to find out what the capitalization convention of Beaux Arts style might might be and if there was already an article on it as it is a link on several pages. Good ahead and change the categorization, I won't be starting an edit war about it. Alex756 16:03, 26 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Patterns

Hi,

actually, patterns in software design are not unrelated to patterns in other design processes, only the patterns themselves are often specific to that type of design. For example, in software design I would have a pattern like the famous "composite pattern" (http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?CompositePattern) which allows me to compose objects into tree structures. In software design, such a pattern basically gives me a template which I can work with. This pattern is then applicable to many different problems like nested files/folders, parts lists, genealogical data etc. See this page (http://www.math.utsa.edu/sphere/salingar/Chris.text.html) for some info on the relationship between patterns in architecture and in software.—Eloquence 02:24, Aug 28, 2003 (UTC)

I saw that you were objecting to andy's redirect at stupa. You haven't added anything further to the talk page for a while so is it ok to assume you haven't found any evidence that a stupa is not a pagoda? From a Google search, it does seem that a stupa is a type of pagoda. If you object to it, can I suggest you add something to the page or list it for deletion as it shows up on blank pages if left blank. Thanks. Angela 00:23, Sep 22, 2003 (UTC)

I'm not going to get in an edit war over the stupa thing, so if you want to change it back go ahead. I just didn't want a blank page. Angela 02:14, Sep 23, 2003 (UTC)

Is this (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Wikipedia:Changing_attribution_for_an_edit&diff=0&oldid=1572451) good enough? It's still in history, but history doesn't show up in a google search. -- Tim Starling 04:40, Oct 16, 2003 (UTC)

Sorry about not replying to your October 16 comment -- I was busy. It would be fairly difficult to remove all references of your IP address from the database, and I don't think it's worth it. Currently, your IP address doesn't seem to be in any searchable part, so a casual passer-by wouldn't see it. I go by my real name online, so as you might imagine, I find it hard to understand what all the fuss is about. If someone obtained your IP address, they would only be able to determine your institution. If someone had the means to connect an IP address with a person (say by hacking, bribery, etc.) they could probably determine your IP address from scratch. We could already guess from your contributions that you are an Indian architecture student, so your IP address doesn't give much more information.

Regarding Classical architecture -- it's possible that some sort of poorly-written script or bot corrupted the database while converting quotes to HTML entities. Have you ever edited that page? -- Tim Starling 05:05, Oct 19, 2003 (UTC)

Thanks for telling me about that image. I'll have to tell you the story now. A troll by the name of Joe Canuck (also called DW and Black Widow) was accusing everyone of slandering him, and told us all he'd sue us. He thought "some" participants in the debate (i.e. me) were "hiding behind their non-US residence", thereby being able to slander him without fear of legal repercussions. The picture is me hiding behind my non-US residence, looking smug. John Owens uploaded another version shortly afterwards, with me looking like Satan. I thought it was funny, but I reverted it straight away because I had to go to bed. Then "Penfold", whoever he is, reverted it back to John's version a couple of weeks ago. I didn't notice until you pointed out your mistake today (which apparently involved reverting it back to the original). So thank you. -- Tim Starling 12:46, Oct 19, 2003 (UTC)

R.K. Narayan

It was a double redirect. I changed R.K.Narayan so it now redirects to R.K. Narayan. There are some pages that link to those redirect pages which I will fix but Wikipedia is so slow right now I might not do it 'till tomorrow. Anyway, I think it should work. Angela 17:32, Oct 22, 2003 (UTC)

Hi,

Just to let you know that I found your article Iyer very well researched and thorough. Good work :-) I especially enjoyed the last paragraph User:Chancemill 15:30 Nov 18, 2003

Restored Tamil Literature, (page history is your friend). -- Cimon Avaro on a pogostick 04:55, Nov 20, 2003 (UTC)

And as Tamil Literature was just a redierct, I have restored Tamil literature! It was just an external link, and therefore instantly deletable. I didn't see why it had ever been listed on VfD. However, as you, Tim Starling and Jimbo all disagree with me I have undeleted it. WP:VFU's the place to go for this normally. Angela 06:39, 20 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments and tips. I shall review all the pages again, and add the stub alert at appropriate pages User:Chancemill 09:30 20 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Never knew that :-). Thanks for the info. Going to check the tip here ;-) chance 09:46, Nov 20, 2003 (UTC)

I may be teaching you what you know, but when you change a page's title, can you preserve its history by using the move tool? See wikipedia:move. Martin 18:49, 21 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Thanks. You are right re: BJP. The Indian political parties are a mess, but I was wrong to change it. Secretlondon 14:56, Dec 19, 2003 (UTC)

Photos

I notice you've uploaded a bunch of photos recently. Did you take the photos yourself, or do they come from some other source? It's best if you can edit the image description pages (eg, image:Ajantha1.JPG) and explicitly state the source, just to keep things clear. --Brion 03:15, 20 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I would like to use your photo on the french page I have made, and others (I am doing a lot of pages on Indian subject, and I put some of my photos GFDL), but I am not sure of their status, are they GFDL ? Could you please, as asked by Brion, edit the image description pages. Many thanks in advance Nataraja 09:03, 23 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Nomination for adminship

Hi KRS

Great work on wikipedia.I would like to congratulate you on being very productive here. I have nominated your name for adminship. If you are inclined to take up adminship kindly visit the admin requests page and sign your acceptance of the nomination. Hope you would :-) Chancemill 16:30, Feb 4, 2004 (UTC)

Sorry for my 'sexist' goof. I am usually very conscious while addressing people on Wikipedia, and often check my edits twice, before I make the "dreaded assumption". English has to still develop and work around the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis problem, I guess.
Though I would like to see you as an admin, I respect your viewpoints. When you reach your decision, please respond on the admin requests page. Regards Chancemill 14:12, Feb 5, 2004 (UTC)

Congratulations! You are now a sysop! I recommend adding your name to the list at Wikipedia:Administrators. Tuf-Kat 22:01, Feb 17, 2004 (UTC)

Hi KRS Good observation about Tollywood. I'm lost myself with all the changes in names of cities. However Tollywood can be used both for Bangla as well as Telugu films is what http://www.bsnl.in/entertainment.asp?intNewsId=27677&disstyle=block&daysbefore=1 claims. Jay 18:08, 19 Feb 2004 (UTC)

... and congrats on the sysopship !! Jay 18:10, 19 Feb 2004 (UTC)
... and thanks KRS for informing me !!! Jay 17:40, 6 Mar 2004 (UTC)

I doubt anyone would complain, but it might be wise to go ahead and list them on Wikipedia:Images for deletion first. I suppose there's no hurry to get them removed from the database, so you might as well wait a week. Tuf-Kat 18:12, Feb 19, 2004 (UTC)

Hello KRS. I apologise for not raising a discussion on the Hampi / Vijayanagar matter first before making changes. Regarding the names, I believe the name Hampi is in use on maps primarily because it is a populated place, and the only such one in the city. The names now correspond to those used by George Michell in his book and website, and also the other modern scholarly references that I have seen. However, if you feel that Hampi is more correct, feel free to change it back. It will probably be necessary then to explain the distinction between the village and the ruins. Hi,

Do you think it would be a good idea to start a WikiProject on Hindu mythology? Some standardization and automation would be useful! -- Arvindn 12:14, 22 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Hi,

I happened to sneak into your discussion, and I thought it would be appropriate to announce that I am still alive :-). Was away from wiki for a few days because of some pressing commitments. Hindu mythology is a great idea. Edits in this field now are sporadic. Currently, one has to mine through sparse links to get through to some good articles. Needs heavy cleanup, and a project is just the right way to start doing something. Chancemill 18:22, Feb 22, 2004 (UTC) PS:- Congrats on the adminship :-)

I am flattered, by your willingness to nominate me for adminship. Thanks very much. However much I would like to take it up, I don't yet feel ready for it. (esp. because my edit rate has nosedived since last month). I think I should spend a little more time here, before I stake a claim for it. I do feel, User:Arvindn deserves it. So kindly go ahead and nominate him.
Thanks again :-) Chancemill 18:33, Feb 22, 2004 (UTC)

Hi, is there any reason you deleted EMachines? I've put it on Wikipedia:Votes for undeletion as I can't see any reason for deleting it, and you made no edit summary to explain why you did it. Angela. 14:15, Feb 24, 2004 (UTC)

Oh, never mind. You must have been undeleting it the same time I was writing that message. :) Angela. 14:15, Feb 24, 2004 (UTC)

How about this: "The plateau is bordered on the eastern and western sides coasts by hilly areas called the Eastern Ghats and Western Ghats respectively before it meets the sea." Jay 08:55, 9 Mar 2004 (UTC)

AIT

Hi,

I think you should replace Aryan invasion theory with your temp (or incrementally, whichever you prefer). I agree with your contention that the article currently deemphasizes the difference between the invasion and migration theories. I read your version it briefly, and the structure seems better than the current article (although shorter section titles would be nice). I'm assuming that the temp version retains all the content. Since there has been no objection to your proposal, why not go ahead? I want to add some points to the article, and I don't want to do so to the current article if its going to be replaced eventually. -- Arvindn 19:00, 14 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Kudos! The article looks so much more complete now. It surpasses, in its content my limited knowledge :-), so should do a bit of reading before I do anything to it (if any objections are raised, that is)Chancemill 13:04, Mar 19, 2004 (UTC)

Incidentally, you're a bit of an enigma :-) Your excellent work at Iyer suggests you might be a Tam. OTOH, you wrote "das = ten", which might mean you're Hindi. I wonder where you're from?

Of course, you might want not to divulge this information, in which case feel completely free to totally ignore this question. -- Arvindn 19:00, 14 Mar 2004 (UTC)

While KRS seems to want to keep this an enigma, I wonder why writing "das = ten", makes one a Hindi. It is Sanskrit too :-). And BTW, I dont think people in the south are so chauvinistically anti-Hindi any more. I presume at least 50% of the educated lot should have come across "Das = Ten" somewhere in their books :-) Chancemill 13:04, Mar 19, 2004 (UTC)

Hinduism

1st. Hinduism IS an ethnicity, "Hindu

Hindoo \Hin"doo\, Hindu \Hin"du\ (?; 277), n.; pl. Hindoosor Hindus. [Per. Hind[=u], fr. Hind, Hind[=u]st[=a]n, India. Cf. Indian.] A native inhabitant of Hindostan. As an ethnical term it is confined to the Dravidian and Aryan races; as a religious name it is restricted to followers of the Veda.

[1] (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=Hindu).

Second, I went out of my way to express that the Caste system is gradually being moved away from, and that there is not a current concensus in favor of it. If you would like to work with me to achieve a more harmonious wording of these facts that is fine, but removing facts simply because we don't like them is not acceptable. Sam Spade 19:07, 20 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Unfortunately, the talk page for the article has become a graffiti wall, with people having a free-for-all throwing conspiracy theories and little-known assertions. Is there a limit to what can be discussed on the Talk Page? I am sorry to see an article that was shaping up so well, become a party to a dispute, so disassociated with the topic. I am particularly peeved at the assertion that there is a class of native Indian Hindus who are more flexible to the other religions, and that the so-called 'real' Hindus (who are supposedly foreign) are not. Isnt this suggestion racist to say the least? I would like to know your opinion on this issue. Chancemill 05:56, Mar 25, 2004 (UTC)

India

KRS: If you didn't realize, I'm not denying Islamic influence. Indeed, I was trying to be specific. Mughals ARE Muslims, so there's no confusion. But there are differences within Islamic culture, such as artforms and dress, etc. THe Mughals are a particular branch of Islamic culture. So I appreciate your deferential and political tone with me and the gratitude for contributions, but I would ask that you try to get in touch with the subject matter. Do some research on Mughal culture and you'll realize I'm not denying Islam, I'm cleaving to tenets of an encyclopedia, those of accuracy and giving as much info as possible. Hindu culture? Or Bengali / Tamil / Gujrati / Kashmiri Hindu culture? Makes a big difference buddy. --LordSuryaofShropshire 23:37, Apr 4, 2004 (UTC)

So what you're basically saying is that you agree and you disagree. I will first address Mughal/Islam. You obviously didn't understand anything I wrote. I was merely clarifying that the group of MUSLIMS who affected Indian art were MUGHAL. That's why the art is called a miniature of the MUGHAL tradition. But that immediately implies Muslim. As I said, I'm quite aware that much of Hindustani (by which I mean north Indian) culture is heavily Islamically influenced. But there is a difference between the Islamic cultures of say, Turkey and Persia. They are affected by their immediate local and adjoining cultures. If you look at the India page, you'll note that I wrote Muslim in parentheses. Do you have a problem with my mentioning that they are Mughal?
Secondly, I believe it is bad form to disregard my request for open, NPOV discussion on the India: Talk board (look at the India Page History) and instead post on my discussion board. I am under no obligation to keep non-essential messages on my board. I believe, personally, that things that relate to me, such as requesting me to quiet down, or speak up, or to talk about arranging a large project, are certainly to be kept up. However, discussion of one specific topic (i.e. Mughal=Islamic or more) that is crucial to one article should be done in an open forum. I will, however, place your message on the India talk board so that the record is kept alive and available for later viewing. --LordSuryaofShropshire 16:30, Apr 6, 2004 (UTC)

It's chill. But I have been sharp-tongued, as is my unfortunate wont. For that I apologize and hope that you will not hesitate to message me with non-'single-article-debate-specific' references. --LordSuryaofShropshire 16:51, Apr 6, 2004 (UTC)
