Mike Garcia (talk · contributions) This user constantly vandalizes the "Judas Priest" article, deleting relevant and accurate information, while adding irrelevant and inaccurate facts, as well as slang and inappropriate language. Please try to reason with this obnoxious and irrational individual.

At first I also didn't understand how Garcia's name didn't show up. Then I understood that he each time just reverts it to his original version.

What I saw as vandalism was his insisting to use the semi-slang word "hugely" instead of "immensely", as well as deleting essential information, adding inaccurate facts and forcusing on the least important facts. He did this about 12 times since 4/20/05. Please compare the current version with his.

Thanks,

Joe I (now "www.jpfo.org")

Some concerns, questions and suggestions for WP

Hi Danny,

I don't exactly know if this is the appropriate place to do this, but since you have more experience and authority here, I guess you'll be able to channel this to the right place.

First I have encountered a merely technical, though improtant issue; there seems to be some problem or confusion in how capitalization is processed by WP. If you type in an entry consisting of more than one word(s), and it is not capitalized exactly as it appears in the existing article, it sends you to the "create this and this article" page or "not found" (search) page. This extremely frequant with album titles. I suggest to make the browser window case-unsensitive. I also believe that it would be beneficial to capitalize all words (even "of", "the" etc.) in titles of articles, even if gramatically incorrect, especially considering the fact that in most cases partial capitalization is anyway incorrect. (eg. "Sad Wings Of Destiny" vs. "Sad Wings of Destiny" are both incorrect, but only the latter will direct you to the desired page.

(Sorry must run - will continue later...)

A small update, I gone to talkpages of users I know on the different language wikipedias and asked them to join. So the following pedia's could become covered: vi, th, id, ms, tl, af, fy, et. I will try to spread the gospel further ;) Waerth 17:18, 27 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Winning the award

A couple of things:

 1. The wiki image syntax for the picture is broken, so "right" appeas as the tooltip. In my usual meddling way I was going to "fix" it but I can't for obvious reasons :-)
 2. What award is that? Is that really you (I assume in the middle)?

Gangnihessou - translation of the week

Hi. I have translated the Gangnihessou article in Romanian. And that gave me an idea, after looking at how great it looked to have so many interlanguage links for an article that not many people know about! How about, each week, we have an article that is translated from en: in as many languages as possible - the article should be a relatively obscure one or one that isn't that well-known, in order to promote greater interlinguality. Or is there already such a thing? Cheers, Ronline 11:53, 30 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for your invitation on the Anglo-Saxon wikipedia to participate in the meta:Translation of the week project. I've translated Gangnihessou into Anglo-Saxon (probably not particularly well) and linked it from a few of the other pages. I'll continue to monitor the Translation of the week page, though I'm not sure whether I can do it every week. --Saforrest 23:19, Oct 30, 2004 (UTC)

This was a very nice idea. Keep me posted on similar things. muriel 13:30, 31 Oct 2004 (UTC)

hey there, what was the deal with blocking me? was there some sort of issue, i saw the blocked users list and it looked messed up.

Hi!

Are you dannyisme from the chat? There are a lot of dannies around :o). Anyway...many people want to move forward with the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Fact_and_Reference_Check project instead of waiting for 'smart' footnotes to be coded into MediaWiki. The first step is agreeing upon a formatting template used to fact check new articles. Several candidates are up for vote, and everyone is encouraged to vote and/or submit their own proposal. Comments on proposals are also very much welcome.

Thanks for your interest in our project, I hope you will vote :o). --ShaunMacPherson 22:46, 4 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Translation of the week

Hallo Danny I have gone to all wikipedia's today and any that looked active I put this message on there, either in VP or an a users talkpage, results are showing ....

Currently we have started a project on meta.wikipedia to get an article translated in as many wikipedias as possible every week. The article will be about a subject that usually gets rarely translated and has a lot of links to other subjects. Currently we have no-one to translate in your language. If someone is interested to participate please see: meta:Translation of the week You can also submit articles from your own languages there that you think deserve translation, but have a small chance of it. The articles must not be to short and not to long and have lots of links to possible other articles! en:user:Waerth

December Arbitration Committee elections

Recent occurances

Hi Danny,

You have recently claimed that you often argue on my behalf. You have also claimed that you blocked me on meta with an expiry period of 24 hours. You have also claimed that "people" were talking about me and that I was very close to being banned by these "people". You have also claimed that you are a strong supporter of linguistic pluralism in the Wikimedia foundation.

However, I have found all of these to be false, with a little investigation.

Apparently, you have in the past said many a bad thing about me and there are others who I would not expect who stand up for me much more than do you.

Your block of me on Meta will not expire until after 00.00 on the 9th - this is longer than 24 hours since you blocked me.

It has also become apparent that while there are a few people who are in favour of banning me, most people seem to think it is too severe a punishment and in fact most seem to be more against it than you do.

As is readily apparent from your recent discussions with numerous Wikipedians, you are clearly not for absolute linguistic plurality. In fact, Anthere, Jimbo, Elian, and even in some respects Angela appear to be more for linguistic plurality than do you, by a long shot.

You have recently claimed that I have been acting histronically, however, a detailed review of your actions and then my actions has revealed that you are the one who has been acting histrionically.

For example:

In the past 3 days, how many posts have I made to all MLs combined? What sorts of actions have I taken regarding recent linguistic issues on Wikipedia? How have I dealt with the conflict between you and I? It is beginning to appear to me like you're Jim Carrey in that movie Cable Guy, being all wacko and then trying to make everybody think that I'm wacko.

It also appears that many people have condemned your recent actions, and many people believe moreso than do I that you are not a nice person, just a couple of examples being one person saying you are a "prick", and another person saying you are extremely condescending.

If you should wish to discuss any of this with me, I will remind you that I attempted to initiate dialogue yesterday, but you declined giving the reason that you were busy (but apparently not busy enough to be chatting in #wikimedia, as well as exchanging PMs with various other Wikipedians).

Yours,

hey there danny, i'm really quite excited to get this up and running. i am defineately prepared to spend a lot of time working on it as i beleive it will prove to be a very valuable resource for learning. unfortunately my 'wikiskills' arent that great, what i'm trying to do is bring, for example, the image of venus on the wikipedia article over to the category of venus for the solar system module, it just does not seem to work. can you help? oh and i'd like to transfer and simplify tables as well. --Larsie 17:39, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Re the observatory. It disappoint me greatly Danny, that you just give up neutrality at the slightest request of an observatory. There is no vandalism on this page, where on the contrary the observatory keeps on adding a pov comment. SweetLittleFluffyThing

Ivory Coast - I hadnt noticed the French name. I remember a long time ago getting jeered for proposing that we use the originating local-language phoneticisation in place of Anglicized names... This would apply quite broadly to countries, cities, language names, etc. Should this not be a wider consistently applied logic, or should Cote d'Ivorie redirect back to Ivory Coast? -SV 02:07, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Hmm... (with frumpy Yoda expression) Do you agree with me that we need a consistent policy, regardless of wether or not a country has "changed" their name "officially" or not? Anglicization has been the traditional MO regardless if any "change" was made. ;) - SV 03:11, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Archives

You may have been under the impression that the disparaging of subpages applies outside the article namespace; to the contrary, users' archives belong as subpages in their own respective talk namespaces, not e.g. in the talk namespace of User:Danny Archive, whose username would be a bit confusing but still perfectly acceptable. I took the liberty of doing the moves rather than making the fuss of describing them either precisely or confusingly.

Now that i've gotten my talk page down from 70-some kB to below 30, i'm in the position to urge you to get yours down from 108 to below 30. (Have you been archiving without dropping the corresponding sections from here?)

Arbitration election dates and timing

Since nobody else has stepped forward, it looks like we will take you up on your offer to administer the Arbitration Committee election again. First of all, my very inadequate thanks to you for doing that, not only this time but previously. Adjusting the dates as you mentioned, so that the election starts and ends on the weekend, should not be a problem. To get the rest of the process firmed up, I also wanted to ask when you want the list of candidates finalized. If we start the election on December 4 (at 0:00 UTC or would something else be better?), can we allow new candidates to declare up until the last 24 hours, or should we use an earlier cutoff? --Michael Snow 21:05, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

I was looking at the U.S. city/state articles and noticed that you've made a number of changes. I've chosen to multi-license all of the rambot contributions under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike Licence. I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license your all your contributions (or at minimum those on the geographic articles) so that we can keep most of the articles available under the multi-license. Many users use the DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual template on their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I understand, but I thought I'd at least ask, just in case. -- Ram-Man 18:02, Nov 17, 2004 (UTC)

You mentioned on my talk page that you'd be willing to multi-license some of your changes (the ones I noticed were made months ago to a few city articles). It's actually really simple. Here are a couple examples of what you would have to add somewhere on your user page (User:Danny):
Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. State article, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain (which many people don't like to do), you could replace DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual with MultiLicensePD
To be fair, the process does allow your contributions to be more accessible, but if someone accepts your changes under an alternative license but not the GFDL, any changes they make could not be folded back into Wikipedia. This is one of the tradeoffs discussed on Wikipedia:Multi-licensing. -- Ram-Man 19:39, Nov 17, 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for your response on my talk page. If you want to do it, just highlight and copy the text (ideally for Option 1) above and save it on your talk page and it will show everyone of your intentions to dual-license your contributions. -- Ram-Man 00:44, Nov 18, 2004 (UTC)

Elections endorsement problem

Hi, since you're helping administer the Arbitration Committee election, I think it would be helpful to have your opinion to help settle the dispute over how to structure the endorsements page. --Michael Snow 20:03, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Harlan Ellison

That was a pretty obvious copyvio in the Harlan Ellison article. A lot of good previous text had been completely replaced by that anon. Could you please explain why you reverted it? See the page history (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Harlan_Ellison&action=history). I'm going to revert it back to the last non-copyvio version. --Ponder 22:49, 2004 Nov 19 (UTC)

No, I do not support your coordinate the arbcom elections. You have not shown any indication that you are willing to stand up to the cabal; as such, I fear you might be biased. Lirath Q. Pynnor

If you ask me to approve of your actions, and I disapprove; and you proceed, don't come patronizing me with "thanks for my honest response". Lirath Q. Pynnor

Statistics question

Danny, are you aware of a source that allows one to determine how many active editors are currently working on Wikipedia? Say within the last week, the last month, and the last six months?

Some users are throwing around claims that imply that they know the sentiment of the average editor, and I would like to be better informed as to how many editors there really are, actively making contributions to articles.

I am really surprised the developers of the Wiki software didn't see fit to build a polling mechanism into the client front end, because given the number of editors I think there may be, the error in almost every poll I've seen must be huge (as to how representative it is of the actual opinions of the editors out there).

If this is not your area of expertise, I would be indebted to you if you would pass this query along to the proper individual whom you think would best be able to provide some answers.

Per a recommendation by Theresa Knott, I will cross post this message to Elian and UninvitedCompany, in the hopes that one of you will know the answer.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

CSB

Hi. I just wanted to say, please do not give up on the CSBT. It may take time, but I believe that the project will get off the ground. I would be happy to discuss ideas with you about how to make that happen. Danny 02:17, 23 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Unfortunately, the project has been hampered by admins from the start. One called it a "socially acceptable back-door way of promoting anti-Americanism" designed to "minimize the significance of the 9/11 attacks". This is the kind of insularity it was up against. Others refused to allow templates on the article pages linking to the project. Each week has seen less and less contributions. Anonymous emails were sent to me deriding it's aims. Now, it is almost moribund. It would make sense to give it up and admit that Wikipedia will always be nothing more than an encyclopaedia mainly for Babylon 5 fans. - Xed 23:05, 23 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Thoughts and sentiments

While I am currently abstaining from article contributions, I wanted to say that I enjoyed reading the article you authored on Quobna Ottobah Cugoano. I also want to bring to your attention that in 1999 Penguin Books has republished his Thoughts and Sentiments on the Evil and Wicked Traffic of the Slavery and Commerce of the Human Species, Humbly Submitted to The Inhabitants of Great-Britain, by Ottobah Cugoano, a Native of Africa. (London, 1787), and his Thoughts and Sentiments on the Evil of Slavery; or, the Nature of Servitude as Admitted by the Law of God, Compared to the Modern Slavery of the Africans in the West-Indies; In an Answer to the Advocates for Slavery and Oppression. Addressed to the Sons of Africa, by a Native (London, 1791), including Illustrations and Explanatory Notes to the 1787 and 1791 Publication(s).

It is my pleasure. The Carretta compilation, encompassing both works, is undoubtedly the best and most recent of its kind, and should prove most useful to the reader and prsopective researcher. Keep up the good work! El_C

Arbitration Committee election

Dear Arbitration Committee election organizer:

Fred Bauder has likened me to Holocaust deniers on the Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2004/Candidate statements/Endorsements page (by adding this link on top of his original statements [1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_revisionism_%28political%29#Revisionist_techniques)). [2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Wikipedia:Arbitration_Committee_Elections_December_2004/Candidate_statements/Endorsements/172&diff=8105086&oldid=8057912) I am a professional historian; and most of my family was murdered in Nazi death camps. So I find this statement intolerable. I will no longer contribute to Wikipedia if this slander is allowed to stand, given that it is coming from someone with the stature in the community of a member of the Arbitration Committee.

Good idea!

Hi Danny. Thanks for sharing the idea of looking for uncapitalized adjectives of ethnic groups and languages in the 'fix common mistakes' project. I ran a search for such words this afternoon and I estimate there's thousands of such errors in the article space. That's a lot more than I expected. Anyway, this kind of errors is perfect for distributed fixing. I have listed a part of the first results at the project page. Best regards, Sietse 17:40, 4 Dec 2004 (UTC)

ArbCom Election voting problem

Hi, I'm having a problem with the automated voting software, as it keeps telling me I cannot vote, since my first editing with User:M7it is not three months old. Actually, I've made my first edit on en.wiki on 23:45, 11 Jul 2004 (hist) Amalasuntha. Please see my older contributions here http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Contributions&target=213.255.107.33

User:Neutrality was the one that suggested that I'd better creating an account on en.wiki, also in order to get the right to vote. I've duly posted a request on Wikipedia:Changing attribution for an edit, but it hasn't been processed yet. Is it possible for you to process my own vote in another way, maybe excluding the automated software mechanism, or I am going to lose my vote into some bureaucratic cavil? Thank you, M7it 23:55, 4 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Thank you for you answer. I'm not enthusiastic about this fact, and modified the campaign banner for my page accordingly. Ciao, M7it 23:48, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Artificial Consciousness

Hi! I contacted Cimon Avaro, and explained it to him at [3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Cimon_avaro#Artificial_Consciousness) From his reply at [4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Tkorrovi#I_can_try_to_see_what_I_can_do_to_ease_teh_tension) it seems that he agrees to mediate, otherwise I agree with any mediator who Angela recommended. In the only comment at [5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Artificial_consciousness#Request_for_comment) in response to my request for comment, one says that "I've never heard the term "artifical consciousness" used before", so this seems to be causing misunderstanding. They read it, and some even edit it, as Artificial Intelligence article, and don't find it to be a good Artificial Intelligence article, though it was never intended to be such. Artificial consciousness is a general term, which incorporates many similar interpretations, for example Digital Sentience article was previously merged into it. It is a separate field in science (qv a special edition of Journal of Consciousness Studies dedicated to Machine Consciousness at [6] (http://www.imprint.co.uk/jcs_10_4-5.html)). I started the artificial consciousness article more than a year ago, after a short article under that heading, created under psychology, was deleted for no content (it merely stated that no such system has been made yet). At first it also was a short article, mainly containing a definition and some aspects of AC, it became considerably longer after the other editors came. Tkorrovi 15:32, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I came across the Artificial consciousness article a couple of weeks ago after searching for articles on strong AI. The strong AI heading was a stub but the Artificial consciousness heading was full of strong AI content. It was clear to me that the Artificial consciousness article was mis-classified so I posted an item about its neutrality in the discussion section and suggested that it be moved to strong AI. I later transferred it to strong AI where it looked quite good see: Article under strong AI (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Strong_AI&oldid=8018626). The only change I made was to use MS Word to change all occurrences of Artificial consciousness to strong AI and to leave behind the test and tin-men links.

Having moved the article I then wrote a new, briefer text for Artificial consciousness, keeping some of the original such as tests and tin-men links. See: New article for Artificial consciousness (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Artificial_consciousness&oldid=8018073)

It is evident from the discussion at Artificial consciousness that I am not the first to have spotted that the previous article was incorrectly classified. We now have a problem because any discussion of the classification issue is likely to descend into a potentially endless debate on Turing machines, AI, consciousness etc. whereas the issue is simply one of classification, as user Slim pointed out when he/she responded to the Request for Comment. User:80.3.32.9 8/12/04

I have a suggestion, we can see from the last week of work by Tkorrovi that a lot of his contribution is now being made at strong AI. Given this, would he consider re-instating the article that I contributed and adding to that? We would then get a strong AI article where previously there was a stub and a more general Artificial Consciousness article where previously this was considered a bit specific by several users. User:80.3.32.98/12/04

You are sock-puppet of Matthew Stannard. Again the same lies Matthew Stannard likes to repeat so often. Nothing in strong AI was written by me, see the history. Strong AI article was once merged with Artificial Intelligence, it is not right to create this article again by anybody, and as you did, it must be merged with Artificial Intelligence. And now I must say once again, that this is not an editing practice of Wikipedia, to replace the article with a text written only by a single user. No, I shall not edit your article, the *original* article must be edited normally. And, as I said already many times, why don't you want to edit the article normally, like all Wikipedia articles are edited, and add your changes? For the rest, please see the article's talk page, it is not a proper place here to talk all these thing once again. Matthew Stannard an Paul Beardsell, stop trolling. Tkorrovi 15:30, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)
To be honest I did edit your article. Unfortunately this meant removing your stuff on strong AI and leaving the rest. However, I did put your strong AI work where it belonged.User:80.3.32.9 9/12/04

Re: your note

You posted a note on my talk page about my vote in the ArbCom election. You noticed that votes had been registered both by Cribcage and Cribnotes, and you stated that one had been canceled.

I've reviewed the election notices. Can you refer me to the section which states that multiple usernames cannot vote from the same IP, regardless of whether they otherwise qualify? Thank you.

For the record: I was hardly "stuffing the ballot box." There is a clear notice posted on the Cribnotes userpage explaining why that account exists, and you'll note it hasn't been used since April. Since I've been forthright, you might have taken a moment and asked me about the discrepancy. Cribcage 00:17, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? So, after careful thought, I decided to offer you simply a sandwich in memory of this week end and discovering potato pancakes for Hannukah, pickles, pastrami and strange cakes.

I was sorry not to be able to say you good bye the other day and I hope you were not too unhappy of the miss at OSI. I am sure we will see each other again.

Problem with the WP:CSD proposal

Since you have facilitated other important votes, I am hoping you can look into a problem with Wikipedia:Proposal to expand WP:CSD.

The original author (User:Blankfaze) and another admin (User:Neutrality) have reverted and protected it to prevent addition of a new proposal (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Proposal_to_expand_WP:CSD&diff=8932326&oldid=8932203) which both of them personally disagree with. These two have assumed a mantle of "ownership " of the proposal all along, but protecting the page to prevent inclusion of a proposal change is outside any bounds. The page should certainly be unprotected, and the new proposal added. I had posted earlier about adding it on the talk page, and no objections were indicated. If this issue persists, then the vote should certainly be postponed. According to Wikipedia:Survey guidelines, "Consensus must be reached about the nature of the survey before it starts." Thanks for your help. -- Netoholic @ 07:12, 2004 Dec 30 (UTC)

re: Mediation

Hi Danny, Thanks for your note on my talk page re: mediation with user:Jewbacca. I don't have any dispute with him, to my knowledge, except for some odd messages sent to my account after I criticized a VfD he'd sponsored. I didn't find them theatening, or even personally-directed, but did find them irksome enough to lose my temper. I saw this mediation request as being about my having lost my temper -- a means of stirring up a conflict. My position is that there isn't a conflict: I'm not gravely offended, don't believe I said anything worthy of extended offense, and have no wish or intention to communicate with this user, or others involved, again. There are certainly other more productive things to do here, and my own projects include an article just voted to feature article status. Thanks again, and I appreciate your attention. Hey, what was this [8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Saint-Pierre_and_Miquelon&diff=9420907&oldid=9420491) about? An intervention? — Davenbelle 02:32, Jan 17, 2005 (UTC)

re: "Huh?"

I just converted the infobox on the Saint-Pierre and Miquelon page to a wiki table from an html table and saved it in an /infobox subpage. Just 4 minutes later, you copied the table into the main article; this was before I'd gotten to updating the article to use the new infobox. I'd like to know what that was about. — Davenbelle 02:51, Jan 17, 2005 (UTC)

re:

No need to get huffy. I saw an infobox on a separate page, something that we do not do. I realized that it was better in wikiformat than in the old html format (and I did about half of the original wikiboxes in html), so I moved it over to where it should be. I will accept your thank your for saving you that step, and respond with, "you're welcome." Danny 02:57, 17 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I didn't mean to sound "huffy". I am not aware of any policy about not putting infoboxes on subpages. I have voted in favor of doing this on country pages, which I see you voted against. The infobox you moved included a link to edit itself, which was the whole point of my little experiment. Moving it to the main article resulted in a link to edit something other than what you pasted into the page. I expect that when you did html tables the wikitable format was not available; I've been trying to focus on older html infoboxes in order to kill two birds with one stone. — Davenbelle 03:12, Jan 17, 2005 (UTC)

Hi again,

Nice colors - someone slip some LSD into your talk page?

I want to let you know that I've read more of the history of subpages and while I'm not really happy about it, I'm not going to pee in the wind, either. I've, ah, normalized the Saint-Pierre and Miquelon infobox and placed a del tag on the subpage; same with Tuvalu. I also did an infobox for Nepal in a subpage using the new template; Mav swapped back the table when the template parameters changed and broke it. I'd go fix it, but don't think cantus and netoholic need more instances to maintain while they sort out the parameters. I'd be happy to be involved still. — Davenbelle 08:55, Jan 20, 2005 (UTC)

Discovery Channel Pompeii images

Hi, Danny. User:CryptoDerk tells me that you spoke with the Discovery Channel to get permission to use their Pompeii photos in the 'pedia. Could you clarify this at the image description pages at the Commons? The pages just say "Copyrighted, free for any use." without any mention that they were obtained with permission or from whom. Also, did the film creators really say "any use" (i.e., other people could copy the images ad infinitum?).

I'm just trying to keep the Commons nice and tidy. Thanks in advance! -- hike395 05:40, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Hi Danny - I think this is all clear now, although I'm going to add a little more to the image pages on Commons just to be sure. I'll also check to see if I can make the local pages clearer. This is a bit unusual for everyone I guess - a wonderful development, and one I expect will happen more. I'm sure you've seen others of the image offers on the Foundation email - I think we will be getting a lot more of these soon :) Talk to you later, have fun getting us the dinosaur pics! -- sannse (talk) 17:22, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)

System of a Down

It looks like MrHate is right, as all the more official sites agree with him, but I haven't looked that closely. I probably won't have time to do much more for a day or two... probably Saturday, same as you. Still, I pointed both album pages to Talk:System of a Down to centralize discussion and encouraged the citing of sources. I've also mentioned the Three Revert Rule and warned both users against edit warring. Tuf-Kat 03:29, Mar 4, 2005 (UTC)

Mediation

I was wondering if you'd have the time or interest to look into this request for mediation between myself and User:El_C. I remember you having produced compromise between 172 and myself in regards to the introduction of the Hitler page. With that, and our own resolved differences, I hold you in particularly high esteem as a mediator. Of course, if you are otherwise occupied or disinterested I completely understand. Thank you for your time, (Sam Spade | talk | contributions) 01:46, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi Danny,
I'm Wally, and I'm representing El_C in the dispute between he and Sam Spade. We were both pleased to hear you'd accepted mediation duties on this issue.
I think all parties concerned are anxious that this be dealt with in a fair manner first and foremost and an amicable one next to that. Sam has repeatedly expressed his wish that this dispute not go to arbitration, and El_C echoes this, although we do feel that certain improper and uncivil behavior on Sam's part need to be addressed.
I'd like to work out a time when the four of us — myself, yourself, Sam and El_C — could all meet on IRC and attempt to get some dialogue going. El_C has recently been recovering from some rather nasty medical issues and thus his schedule is not terribly fluid; however, I'm confident this can be worked out.
Thanks again for accepting mediation,
Wally 18:30, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I don't agree w wally's characterization of my position, as I have made clear to him a few times now. Have a look @ WP:RfM#User:El_C_and_User:Sam_Spade and the links there for more information. Cheers, (Sam Spade | talk | contributions) 19:53, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Calcutta -> Kolkata name change

Hi there. I noticed you voted in the Wikipedia:Naming policy poll to keep the Wikipedia policy of naming an article with the most familiar English name. You may not be aware that another attempt has begun to rename the Calcutta article to Kolkata, which is blatantly not the most common name of the city, whether it's official or not. If you want to vote on the issue you can do so at Talk:Calcutta. Cheers. -- Necrothesp 13:48, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Mediation Request?

Hi Danny,

I'm writing regarding the proposed mediation between El_C and Sam Spade for which there was a request you act as an officiator. This was around two weeks ago, and I've heard nothing further about it since. Are you still able to act as mediator? I and El_C, whom I represent, are both very anxious that this go forward. Please contact me as soon as is practicable if you have any questions, and I would very much like to organize a time and date for you, El_C, Sam and myself to meet and begin work on this process.

Thanks,

Wally

EB2004 indexing

You put section breaks into Wikipedia:2004 Encyclopedia topics/1 (I fixed a missing =). I can see that's useful for a more efficient edit, but each time we cut out a bunch of blue links, the number of items in the section becomes less than 100, so it's less useful as a guide, and breaking up the list makes it harder to calculate % done. If we have divisions, would it be more logical to put them at every 100th item of the original list, so that we can get some idea of progress are we hack away? Indexing the list as it stands today seems a little arbitrary.

Come to think, is the extra efficiency worth while? Page 1 currently is about 22K.

Similar comment on the start you made on annotating Wikipedia:2004 Encyclopedia topics. Shouldn't we use the original list of items? For example, section 1 originally started with 12-Tone Music. It seems more logical - any objections if I make the change? David Brooks 05:35, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I read your explanation (User talk:DavidBrooks); division is a good thing. My point was that dividing it into 100's based on the list as it stood on Mar 18 seems a little... arbitrary. No big deal anyway. And I'll experiment with something more informative than "1". David Brooks 20:31, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Censorship policy in Hebrew Wikipedia

Hello,

I was wandering in he.WP and got to our "miznon"(where people debate policies http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/ויקיפדיה:מזנון) And I saw a debate about censoring few article that some wiki memeber translated from english wikipedia (the articles were about few porn-star actresses) at first they started that debate because they hated this guy.. and then decided to prohibit all articles about porn in wikipedia, because they say it's a display of disrespect... I tried to talk about it in the session they opened, but they even censored me! after 3 times of being censored and unable to continue the debate they did there, I turned to the "discussion" tab of this session and there tried to explain they shouldn't decide for others what to censor... they gave the same excuses and swaggered that they won't have any porno article there! (looking at the en.WP and fr.WP I saw that they don't censor this kind of stuff.. and again i remind that the person who wrote the articles translated them from en.WP)

I think it's outrageous that they took themselves the LIBERTY to limit other's LIBERTY by CENSORSHIP policy! (and this is all happening under the banner "The Free Encyclopedia").. Trying to explain them the meaning of an encyclopedia and even mentioning Denis Diderot didn't help... I debated it a bit in the irc channel of #wikipedia and #wikimedia and was told to approach you and you might help since you know hebrew and has the ability to maybe persuade them...

Please help me make he.WP free for all opinions and not ruled by SOME people that THINK they know what's GOOD/BAD and wish to ENFORCE their opinions on ALL of the others.

Thank you.

Armenian Genocide Mediation

Hi Danny,

In my role as an admin, I've been following the developments over the Armenian Genocide article. I've been asked to step in on several occasions and now things are getting way out of hand.

Coolcat and Fadix both accuse each other of POV editing and as a result the page was reverted numerous times, and the talk page was left with a grand total of 11 archives of discussion.

An anon posted an order on Fadix's user page to have his edits checked by Coolcat, but requests to developers (User:Jamesday) to check whether this IP is Coolcat or some other disputant impersonating him, have given me no results as of yet. Coolcat has denied it was him, and as he seems to know IPs can be tracked, I'm leaning towards thinking he's telling the truth.

It looks like both parties are willing to mediate, but Jwrosenzweig (preferred mediator of User:Fadix) seems to be absent. I know RFM is currently not fully functional, but would you be willing to sort out this mess, or at least get an other mediator to look at it. I'm afraid RfC or arbitration would be detrimental to the already tense atmosphere between the disputants. -- Mgm|(talk) 08:46, Mar 23, 2005 (UTC)

Mike Garcia

Ah, hello. I'd come to believe you were incommunicado.

The Mike Garcia situation is as follows: two users, an anon and MrHate, have come to the AMA regarding the pages for Ned's Atomic Dustbin and the System of a Down Hypnotize/Mesmerize controversy, respectively. In each page, Mike Garcia is specifically noted as reverting others' changes more often than is acceptable and making rude comments (including threatening a revert war: see Talk:Ned's Atomic Dustbin). I've referred them both to you and Guanaco, as you two have authority with this user that is better utilized than the normal channels, with the hope that it can be settled outside the dispute resolution process. However, if the AMA receives anymore complaints, an injunction will be necessary against this behavior.

On an unrelated note, have you received my messages regarding the El_C/Sam Spade dispute? Are you still available to mediate for this? Thanks in advance. Wally 00:47, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Well, if the situation for one of two is resolved, please let that user know to withdraw their request for assistance — all too often, users post asking for help, solve the issue themselves and then forget to tell us that!
Also, don't worry about the mediation, I just wanted to make sure you were still willing to do it. I hope the life troubles get cleared up both quickly and amicably. Let me know when you're available. Wally 18:30, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Biweekly special article

Dear Fact and Reference Check member,

After many months, the biweekly special article has been brought back! The article we will be referencing is Titan (moon). Please do your best to help out!

I'm asking all members to verify at least three facts in the article, and I'd really appreciate it if you could try and help with this. We have about 19 members, so if even 3/4 of us try and fulfil this 'dream', that'll be 45 references!

If you need some information on how to use footnotes, take a look at Wikipedia:Footnote3, which has a method of autonumbering footnotes. Unfortunately, they produce brackets around the footnotes, but it seems to be our best alternative until they integrate the footnote feature request code (http://bugzilla.wikipedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=192) into MediaWiki. You may be interested in voting for the aforementioned feature request.

Cheers,

Several "lists of things Wikipedia hasn't got"

We have Wikipedia:2004 Encyclopedia topics, Wikipedia:1911 Encyclopedia topics and Wikipedia:List of encyclopedia topics (generated from various sources). Beyond a mere "tiding up" exercise I can see several advantages to merging the lists. Does anyone object if I do that? Pcb21| Pete 17:57, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Good idea. - SimonP 18:03, Mar 28, 2005 (UTC)
I think the lists should be kept separate. When checking for redirects, I know the sources of each list, and this makes it easier to eliminate articles. Please do not merge them! Danny 20:28, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Ok, good that I checked first :). What I actually had in mind was to create a merged list but equipped with three columns of tick boxes to indicate whether the title came from 1911, 2004 or Magnus' list. The idea is that if the same name appears on several lists it will have several ticks and stick out as a particularly important topic for us to cover. The ticks will mean that you will still be able to refer to the correct source, and so your life will not get any more difficult. What do you think? Pcb21| Pete 08:02, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)

-Thought I would copy my response to your talk page to make sure you saw it... you've been doing absolutely brilliant work on these lists so it would be a sin to make things difficult for you - would the above scheme make things difficult for you? Pcb21| Pete 18:35, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi Danny. Just wanted to let you know that if you're still interested in doing a meetup in the DC area, I'm available to help out. As far as I know, I'm the only really active Wikipedian in or immediately around D.C. Isomorphic 08:49, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Sorry for the long delay in response. I don't know too much about lodgings around D.C. since I've never had any reason to use them myself, but I can tell you that there are several hotels and motels along U.S. Route 1 near University of Maryland, in College Park. Given their location, they'll probably be more reasonably priced than anything you'd get downtown. They're a short bus ride or a medium-long walk from the College Park metro station, which in turn gets you downtown in around 25 minutes. Isomorphic 07:21, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Wergeland

Hi, I noticed you created the page Wergeland and made it a redirect to Wergeland Township, Minnesota. As there's also a Norwegian poet named Wergeland (Henrik Wergeland, who's quite famous in Norway, and usually referred to just as 'Wergeland' - and, given that the township is Minnesota, I wouldn't be surprised if it is named after him:) - would you mind if I made Wergeland into a disambig? Relatively new here, so I don't want to step on anyone's toes:) Best wishes, Tobyox 11:27, Mar 31, 2005 (UTC)

Britannica Pages

Hi, thanks for your help on the Britannica pages. The idea, however, is not to link them, but to create redirects, so that if people use that term it will automatically redirect. This is done by typing #REDIRECT Name of article. Thanks. Danny 02:29, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I know how to make redirects, and I made them for the articles where I thought they made sense. I don't think it makes much sense to make redirect e.g. for The Royal Air Force or The Royal Navy, so I just linked them without the "The". - Marcika 02:37, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

We've been doing that for all the redirects for a very long time. The redirects serve as a precautionary measure, in case people put in the wrong words in links. Danny 02:39, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for explaining me the purpose of the redirects. However, I think it is highly unlikely that anybody would enter "The Old Pretender James Edward" into the Wikipedia search box instead of "James Edward" or that anybody would wikilink that term in an article. I thought the sense of the Wikipedia:2004_Encyclopedia_topics page was to make sure the articles exist and can be found in Wikipedia, not to create gratuitous redirects. - Marcika 02:51, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Marcika, there's a version of this discussion at Wikipedia_talk:2004_Encyclopedia_topics#Redirects_and_capitalization; I added another paragraph to address this discussion (I think). David Brooks 16:16, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Mike Garcia, again

We've received another complaint, ironically from a user who found us through Mike Garcia's own complaint. I investigated the page in question and noticed it had been protected following a blatant violation on his part of the 3RR. The user in question, an anon, explained himself on the talk page, and repeatedly did so in edit summaries, before User:Tony Sidaway protected the page. I've noted to Mike, and now you, that unless an explanation is forthcoming on this issue in the next day, on behalf of all three users I'm seeking an injunction. Wally 01:28, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

This instance of recidivism is already very troubling, and I don't see it as likely to improve as this regression has been so rapid. However, in deference to the amount of time you've spent on the issue and your seniority in Wikipedia, I will hold off as long as the issue is settled to the satisfaction of the complaining users. I will also see, if you'd like, if AMA representation is to be had for Mike Garcia.
That said, bullying anons and new users is abominable. I hope you can correct this behavior. Wally 01:39, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

EB2004

Danny, I'm a bit confused about this project. I just had a look at the history of the last page, which is marked as done, and there's still quite a lot of red links there. I thought the links were meant to be blue before they were removed?

Also, is there any chance you'd be able to archive your talk page? The size of it is a bit nasty for those of us who have to pay by the megabyte for our bandwidth. Ambi 03:35, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Some of them from /29 got moved into /28 but rest assured no red topics were deleted. Pcb21| Pete 11:26, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I'm just looking at the deleted page 29, and it looks as if there's still a lot of red links there, which has me a tad confused. Oh well. Ambi 14:03, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Yes, but if you look at the bottom of page 28, I am sure you will see there the same red links that are on the deleted page 29 - Zwischengoldglaser is in this category for example. Don't worry we are taking this task quite seriously, massive thought it is! Pcb21| Pete 14:15, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Let's undelete 29 (to preserve the history) and add an explanatory note. I suggested this to Pete. David Brooks 17:57, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Wow Danny you are quick - I had barely submitted The Minch, came back to /26 to remove it from the list and it had already gone! :) You are doing such a good job with those lists I am going to forget about merging and just stick with what works for you because it works for me too. Pcb21| Pete 11:26, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I had the same experience with Tenor Drum (a re-capitalize redirect but I had to add the EB meaning to Tenor drum first). Danny, do you have an alarm rigged for every link that blue-ifies? David Brooks 17:57, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Why is it in my user page?

Why does [my sandbox|User:flarn2005/sandbox] need to be moved to my user page? I thought anyone was allowed to make their own article, sandboxes included! The sandboxes that were originally on Wikipedia didn't need to be on user pages, so why should mine? Since I do not believe it should be on my user page, I will move it back to where it previously was. If you really want to move it to my user page again, please send me a message explaining why.

Thank you!

P.S. If it is in my user page, I cannot get to it by simply typing "Sandbox 2" in the search box! I do not like that; I want it to be like the original sandboxes.

Thanks for the compliment - and for the original redirect. With so many English renderings of the name it's nearly impossible to know what to search for! --Gene_poole 00:59, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the situation on Bleed Like Me. Short form - edit war, page was protected, page was unprotected, Mike resumed edit war, has yet to explain self. Tony Sidaway is trying to make sense out of it, Wally is calling for blood, the usual. Thought you might want to get involved. :) Snowspinner 15:57, Apr 9, 2005 (UTC)

Hi, I unprotected Bleed Like Me at the request of an editor who pointed out that the CD had been released, the music rags are reviewing it, people have listened to the tracks and read the liner notes, and now they want to expand the article. Mike has changed the release information back and someone else has contacted me after editing back to the version agreed on the talk page, but not wanting to get into another war over this. Would you be able to persuade Mike to let it rest? There is strong agreement on the content and that Mike's version, while not strictly wrong, is less complete. Nobody agrees that Mike's version is better. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 20:05, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Mike Garcia is still reverting other users, violating the 3RR and being rude and uncivil. Are you handling him or not? Hello. Are you responsible for all of the material that has been posted here about Edmeston? If so, i think it is fascinating, but I am not sure that this is the right place for it. On the other hand, it would be a great addition to Wikisource (www.wikisource.org) or Wikibooks (www.wikibooks.org). Would you consider moving it there? Please let me know. Danny 00:37, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Nonenmac"

I am responsible for most of that stuff and would consider moving it. I questioned from the start whether Wikipedia was an appropriate place for the information, but I thought that it should be available to the community, and I found that Wikipedia was a very easy way to do it, especially in the abilitly to easily link to articles about related historical figures and occurances within Wikipedia. I justified it puting it there by comparing it to the number of articles on individual video game characters and other such microscopic details of pop culture.
My concern with moving the Edmeston articles to either Wikibooks or Wikisource is that the articles contain a large number of links to other Wikipedia articles. I assume that they would all need to change to external links back to Wikipedia, which would be a little tedious to do. The Wikibooks and Wikisource articles that I've looked at have very few internal or external links (other than tables of contents and such) -- I'm not sure why. I would also have a lot of pictures to either move or link back to.
Any ideas which domain would be more appropriate?
YES, YES, please restore the Edmeston, New York (Chronology) article and all the sub-articles. We spent months on that -- probably should have kept a local copy. Please give us a couple days or so. I'll let you know when I'm done. Thank you very much! Nonenmac 01:55, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Lancaster

Hello User:Danny... User:The anon here... I would assume that you are a Wiki Administrator of a higher authority than most. I would like to talk with you about something regarding the Lancaster (disambiguation) page. If you look on the discussion page for the disambiguation page, you could probably follow what has been happening...

Basically here is the overview... There is some administrator with the screenname User:Duncharris that changed the Lancaster link to go to the English city instead of the disambiguation page. So I changed it back and gave him my reasons for doing so, which is that there are 3 Lancasters in the world that are important, 4 if you include the Ohio city. Although the English city is the original, the Pennsylvania city is the most thought of when using the term by English language speakers and also the most visited with tourists, and the California city is the largest. All three of these cities could give credability to having the primary link. As I see it, and the many others that have looked at it, all three are equal in importance and therefore the link should go to the disambiguation page, the way it was originally up to a few weeks ago. I also explained that there are cities out there that are greater than any of these Lancasters combined that have to share a disambiguation page like San Jose. So if neither San Jose can have precedence, how can a particular Lancaster? Well, he changed it back again, so now I wish for someone higher than a Wiki administrator to get involved so that it can be changed back the way it was originally and have the page protected from this arrogant British biased vandalism. Trip planning

Hi Danny! Still working out my trip to USA next May, I just wanted to know if it would still be possible to share a couple of hours before a good meal/beer on 29th, May (Sunday). I understood that monday 30th would be far more comfortable for you but I admit planning that kind of short trip (L.A./Pasadena-St Pete/Orlando-NYC) is a hell of a job :) villy 09:58, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC) PS : it's a mere question since for now, I'm still considering Monday in NY).

Search engine Fraud

Hi Danny, can you take a look at my talk page (and also in Merovinigan's). I need your Hebrew skills assistance. Thanks in advance Eranb 05:32, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your time and reply in Merovingian's talk page. Does the English Wikipedia have any rules against such a search engine fraud, or can a user do whatever he likes in his user page? Eranb 13:02, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

User:Haham hanuka

Greetings, Danny! I am discussing User:Haham hanuka's self-nomination for adminship with User:Eranb. Eranb has claimed that Haham hanuka has generated much controversy on the Hebrew Wikipedia, where, according to Eranb, Haham hanuka is considered a troll, and does not deserve adminship here. For proof, he provided me with Haham hanuka's Hebrew Wikipedia user page: [10] (http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%9E%D7%A9%D7%AA%D7%9E%D7%A9:%D7%97%D7%9B%D7%9D_%D7%97%D7%A0%D7%95%D7%9B%D7%94) I am completely illiterate in Hebrew, and Eranb said that you might be proficient in the language. Could you please verify whether or not Haham hanuka has had major negative instances on the Hebrew Wikipedia? If not, do you know someone who could? Thank you for your time, --Merovingian (t) (c) 05:37, Apr 27, 2005 (UTC)

Thank you very much, sir, for your third-party help. Good day, --Merovingian (t) (c) 10:52, Apr 27, 2005 (UTC)

Can you provide a translation of his user page at he: (http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%9E%D7%A9%D7%AA%D7%9E%D7%A9:%D7%97%D7%9B%D7%9D_%D7%97%D7%A0%D7%95%D7%9B%D7%94)? Specifically, I'm looking for answers to:

 • What did he do on that Wikipedia that was so wrong?
 • Was he blocked on that Wikipedia? (that would explain why he hasn't edited since 2004)
 • Who put that stuff on his user page? Was it an admin?

This is in preparation for a very likely RfC or RFAr. Thanks. --brian0918 12:35, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thank you, Danny!

I have admired your work from a distance for many, many months, and it goes without saying that I consider you to be truly one of the most outstanding editors in this encyclopedia; the best it has to offer. This is why your vote in support of my RfA means so much to me. Many thanks. Cordially & sincerely yours, El_C 03:12, 2 May 2005 (UTC)

"Reverend" Cantor

Merlinzor (talk • contribs) aka 68.195.57.9 (talk • contribs) appears to have a particular fixation on Lawrence Eliezer Kepecs, Catholic-Jewish reconciliation, and the use of the term "Reverend Cantor". Would you mind looking at his recent edits and giving your opinion? Jayjg (talk) 19:25, 2 May 2005 (UTC)

Mentoring and ward

Good evening Danny. I'm not sure I like the term "mentor" for the function that mentors serve, as it leaves me unable to find a good word for the person being mentored. I may be the least clued-in admin in the barn, but I just learned that User:Mike Garcia has you for a mentor, pursuant to the rather unfortunate history of his edits. I would like to point you to a conflict that I've been asked to look into (you can see the request on my talk page) between Mike and two editors over the article Skin Yard. User:Silversmith and User:Chameleon have both been trying to discuss all the band's albums in a single article, while Mike keeps insisting on a stub for the band and a stub for every album. Silversmith (graciously) and Chameleon (not so much) have asked Mike to elaborate his reasons on the talk page, but to no avail (not surprising, given Mike's history, I suppose, that he would not be very communicative), and Mike continues to revert (twice at least in violation of the 3RR).

I have no opinion on the band at all. I do, however, believe in substantial articles rather than stubs and consolidation of like with like. More to the point, Silversmith, in particular, is getting very stressed by this, and she was very disturbed when Michael entered a request for Advocate on the matter, after threatening to report her for her edits.

I've written to Silversmith to explain that I would speak to someone who knew Michael and that I hoped all of this could be taken care of peaceably. I don't think it's appropriate to rehash any of the history or cast aspersions, so I've kept all that dark and intend to continue doing so. Please let me know if you find yourself unable to act in this case or overworked or overtaxed by all these complaints. I just figured that I'd try to head off a potential RfC on him, as he's beginning to cause some rising temperatures. Thanks. Geogre 02:56, 8 May 2005 (UTC)

Danny, I moved Cong to a new page, Cong (Ethnic), because it was getting way to many hits from other Congs, notably, my article on Cong (Mayo). I didn't want to edit your user page, however to change the backward link there. --Bastique 02:01, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

Any advice?

Hey, I want to make a major proposal — to replace AD/BC with CE/BCE. I am not asking if you agree (though of course I appreciate your views) but I wonder if you have any idea how I should make this proposal? There has been a long debate on the Jesus page, and my explanation for my proposal is very very long. It affects many pages, not just Jesus. And my proposal is I think too long to put on all the relevant talk pages. Is there any convention? Thanks, Slrubenstein | Talk 20:59, 15 May 2005 (UTC)

Wikijunior

Hi, I'll be glad to help. When should it be ready? Are there other pages ready for translation? I'll only be able to work on the Spanish for Latin America version. I used Wikichicos as a prefix instead of Wikijunior, but if you prefer I'll move the page. Cheers, Ascánder 04:42, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

The article is at Wikibooks:es:Wikichicos Sistema Solar/El Sol, it's 30% translated. A friend (Jdiazch) has volunteered to translate texts in figures. Another friend (Javier Carro) is proofreading. I'll drop a note when finished. Ascánder 12:40, 16 May 2005 (UTC)
Translation completed and proofreaded. Cheers. Ascánder 02:15, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
Island not shown in true geographical position translates to la isla no aparece en su verdadera posición geográfica.

Thanks for the map. Unfortunately, there's a typo in the text: The sequence no es aparece has two verbs in third person together which is not allowed by the Spanish grammar. It could be changed into either no aparece or no está.
The second page is at Wikibooks:es:Wikichicos Grandes Felinos/León and is linked by interwikis with the English version. Translation and proofreading will soon be completed. Other pages are under translation. I've warned our new helpers that the English version is not yet finished. Ascánder 03:36, 19 May 2005 (UTC)

IDF Chiefs of Staff articles

Hello Danny : As you can see at: History of the Israel Defense Forces#List of Chiefs of the General Staff, there are no articles about six (out of 18) of the Israel Defense Forces' Chiefs of Staff: (1) Dan Shomron (1987-1991); (2) Moshe Levi (1983-1987); (3) Mordechai Gur (1974-1978); (4) David Elazar (1972-1974); (5) Tzvi Tzur (1961-1963); (6) Chaim Laskov (1958-1961). Are you able to provide some history and information about them? Thank you. IZAK 11:13, 22 May 2005 (UTC)

Hi Danny, as MathKnight and I translated two articles and you made one wonderful translation, I wanted to see if you can also do the last one (Dado). Thank you for considering it! Best, gidonb 00:20, 23 May 2005 (UTC)

Thank you all for your efforts. Danny, thanks for the high-grade translations especially! I have done some very minor copy-edits and linking. Of all the articles, the one on David Elazar still needs the most work, it's a very weak stub, so is there any way you could add to that? It would round out the 18 articles. Thanks again. Thanks for adding religious kibbutzim. I'd like to categorize the list further. Are you aware of what the major kibbutz organizations/affiliations are? history writing in digital projects?

Hello,

I’m a historian working at the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University (http://chnm.gmu.edu/) and we are very interested in digital historical works, including people writing history on Wikipedia. We’d like to talk to people about their experiences working on articles in Wikipedia, in connection with a larger project on the history of the free and open source software movement, and Academic Challenger suggested that you would be a good person to interview. Would you be willing to talk with us about your involvement, either by phone, a/v chat, IM, or email? This could be as lengthy or brief a conversation as you wish.

Thanks for your consideration.

Ghetto

Thanks for the link to your gallery, I hadn't noticed it. As to the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising pics - It's great that our government finally decided to publish some of these pics online. Too bad they're not PD. AAMoF most of them would apply since they are only stored in Polish State Archives, which cannot claim copyright to them, but it's better not to break the license the Polish ministry of foreign affairs used, eventhough it is absurd.. Halibutt 23:45, May 30, 2005 (UTC)

Yup, I'm from Warsaw. The institution you are referring to is most probably the ŻIH, or the Jewish Historical Institute (http://www.jewishinstitute.org.pl/). They have a great collection of pics, and organize a great number of really interesting exhibitions and lectures, but they barely ever publish them. Perhaps if I repaired my scanner I could scan a number of pictures from pre-1994 Polish books (PD-Poland license applicable).
BTW, you might be interested in this site (http://jewish.sites.warszawa.um.gov.pl/) and the future museum of the history of Polish Jews (http://www.jewishmuseum.org.pl/index.php?page=1000000001). Halibutt 23:56, May 30, 2005 (UTC)
Yup, the commie rule had at least one advantage: no sensible copyright law. That's why we shamelessly use it to the wiki's favour :D. Check Template:PD-Poland for details. BTW, who is the author of that book? Halibutt 00:10, May 31, 2005 (UTC)
The text says: The album includes texts by Ruta Sakowska, Marek Edelman, Jan Karski, Franz Blatter, Maria Kann and the archives of the Jewish section of the Main Headquarters of the Home Army. I don't have the book, but might be interesting. Halibutt 00:19, May 31, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll try to find it in the Warsaw University Library (http://buwcd.buw.uw.edu.pl/english/index_eng.htm), they should have it. Halibutt 00:26, May 31, 2005 (UTC)

Spanish interface

Hi, when you use the Spanish interface and try to edit a file, the toolbox does not appears. At the commons, they've found a workaround defining the mediawiki message MediaWiki:Infobox alert/es with a suitable text. I wrote the details here several days ago. Could you please define this message? Thanks in advance. Cheers, (oups, no edit toolbox for me...) Ascánder 16:40, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Almost forgot. The problem is the same at meta (see meta:Talk:Es/Portada). Thanks
 1. The default value for the property MediaWiki:Infobox alert/es seems to be missing some \n characters, which produces an error in the javascript code included for edit pages, preventing the tool bar from displaying. The workaround is to define the property with the necessary \n symbols.
 2. The problem is observable, you just need to change the interface language to Spanish and open an edit page. When you ask for the source of the page, you see the following odd lines:
addInfobox('Pulsa un botón para ver un texto de ejemplo','Escribe el texto al que quieres dar formato.
Se mostrará en la caja de información para poder copiar y pegar.
Ejemplo:
$1
se convertirá en:
$2');
instead of the single line
addInfobox('Pulsa un botón para ver un texto de ejemplo','Escribe el texto al que quieres dar formato.\n Se mostrará en la caja de información para poder copiar y pegar.\nEjemplo:\n$1 \nse convertirá en:\n$2');
Hope this helps to clarify the problem. Ascánder 10:50, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Forgot to mention, m:User:Sanbec, sysop at meta, found the workaround. Ascánder 12:00, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I must catch up on day job... however I'm turning the water project article constantly in my head. Should have some new material up as soon as I can. Take care Big D. E

Spanish interface

Hi, sorry to insist, but could it be possible to set the property as proposed in my previous note, while the problem is solved by the developers? This workaround has been used at the commons for months now without problems. Most important is to apply the workaround at meta which is a multilingual site by nature. (There I recommended to the users with the problem to switch to the English interface, which is really a shame). Cheers. Ascánder 17:47, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

User:Rabbis vs. real Rabbis

Dear Danny, your professional opinion about this is needed: There is a new user who has chosen the controversial user name of of User:Rabbis for himself. I have just sent him a lengthy message with my concerns and a request that he change this name to avoid confusion with real Rabbis, see User talk:Rabbis#Choose another name please. Perhaps you could help him choose another more appropriate name. This user's few entries have revolved around a vote in support of keeping a controverssial article (about some Jewish clergy meeting with the last Pope) that was eventually deleted [11] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/Lawrence_Eliezer_Kepecs&diff=13271687&oldid=13271492) downloading a newspaper article (because it mentions a cantor who later met with the Pope, singing at a concert) that is nominated for deletion [12] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:5_Towns_Jewish_Times_p.19-Kepecs_12-12-03.jpg) votes to keep a vanity article at [13] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/Ofer_Barnoy&diff=14275243&oldid=14271651) then votes to "undelete" article about anon cantor [14] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Votes_for_undeletion&diff=14159690&oldid=14157454) then threatens "I've discussed the matter with my colleagues, and we are getting the Anti-Defamation League involved now" at Talk:Relations between Catholicism and Judaism#Removed vanity section, then inserts stuff into Relations between Catholicism and Judaism and is reverted twice [15] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Relations_between_Catholicism_and_Judaism&diff=15253132&oldid=15071676) and [16] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Relations_between_Catholicism_and_Judaism&diff=0&oldid=15254038) Please look into this. Thank you. IZAK 23:47, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

ADL "threat"

 • See Talk:Relations between Catholicism and Judaism#Removed vanity section: "...You've gone too far removing this. If you do not leave the article alone, the situation will escalate. I've discussed the matter with my colleagues, and we are getting the Anti-Defamation League involved now. You see, the event happened whether you like it or not. It made history, and you do not have the right to rewrite history by removing all references to the event in your so called "encyclopedia.". I hope you are content. --Rabbis 12:12, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)" and further context and discussions overe there. IZAK 01:26, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

User:Cantors vs. real Cantors

Hi again Danny and thank you for checking into User:Rabbis' antics, but there is another piece to this it seems (so far): The following seems clearly related to the above User:Rabbis patterns only this time my objections have been lodged against User:Cantors for similar reasons, see User talk:Cantors#Choose another name please. This user may be a sockpuppet for User:Rabbis because of a corresposnding pattern and a fixated interest in "Eliezer Kepecs" almost exclusively. User:Cantors' first edit [17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Cantors&oldid=14309465) is on 17 May '05, and User:Rabbis was on 5 May '05 [18] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/Lawrence_Eliezer_Kepecs&diff=13266687&oldid=13266652) . From the start [19] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Jayjg&diff=14127020&oldid=14126158), User:Cantors is focused on only one thing "Cantor Kepecs" (himself?), lists the article about himself (?) for "undeletion" [20] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Votes_for_undeletion&diff=14137895&oldid=14137816) and votes to "keep" [21] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/Victor_Beck&diff=14212461&oldid=14212031) and [22] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/Gary_Krupp&diff=14213773&oldid=14212145) two vanity articles that are deleted, inserts and is reverted for interfering with undeletion policy discussions [23] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia_talk:Undeletion_policy&diff=14222688&oldid=14221344), and after placing six (!) "categories" on his user page has them removed [24] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Cantors&diff=14448885&oldid=14448877) by an admin. This needs some serious correction. Thanks for your help. IZAK 02:08, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

VfD of User:Cantors

Under these extradordinarily confusing circumstances, I have now nominated the User:Cantors page for deletion of contents and also renaming. See Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Cantors. Thank you. IZAK 03:27, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Other user names with the same "Cantor" content

On User:Merlinzor and User talk:Merlinzor there is the same stuff repeated as on User:Cantors. Is this guy meshugge or what? It now looks to me like serial spamming of the same article by creating sockpuppet "user" pages. It's more than a little nutty. IZAK 05:25, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Mazeppa

We already have the article on him. It's at Ivan Mazepa and it actually spells with one "p" in Ukrainian and Russian.  Grue  05:03, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

WikiProject Stub sorting

Thanks for adding the Auguste Francois Baird article. As part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting, I have replaced the generalized stub tag with artist-stub. When you create new articles, it would be great if you could use these more specific tags whenever possible. Thanks, and continue contributing to Wikipedia! Conscious 05:06, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, that was my fault. HKT 05:57, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Your services are needed

Danny, I'd appreciate it if you could put in a word on Talk:A'man. There's a debate about what transliteration we should use for them on Wikipedia. →Raul654 17:21, Jun 20, 2005 (UTC)

I would be grateful if you could comment on my suggestions in Talk:A'man#Apostrophe.--Doron 08:54, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Royal consorts and monarchs
