How to type in Pinyin:

Note: files are currently down while I search for new webspace.

  1. Left-click here (http://mugu.cjb.net/pinyinkeyboard.zip) to download an installer file and save it to your hard drive.
  2. Feel free to virus scan it, then extract all files to your hard drive.
  3. Go to where you unzipped the files, open the folder named Pinyin5, and execute the file named Pinyin5.msi.
  4. Then select United States (Pinyin Enabled) as your keyboard.
    • To do this in Windows XP, open Control Panel, then Regional and Language Options, then click Languages (picture) (http://mugu.cjb.net/1.png) Details (picture) (http://mugu.cjb.net/2.png) Add (picture) (http://mugu.cjb.net/3.png). Make sure English (United States) is selected under "Input language", make sure Keyboard Layout/IME is selected, then choose United States (Pinyin Enabled) under the Keyboard Layout/IME menu. (picture) (http://mugu.cjb.net/4.png)
    • Click OK
    • Then choose English (United States) - United States (Pinyin Enabled) under the Default Input Language drop-down menu. (picture) (http://mugu.cjb.net/5.png)
    • Click OK on all dialog boxes.

To use:

  • Hold down Ctrl and tap the tone number (1, 2, 3, or 4) of the letter you want to write. Then release both keys and enter the letter (a, e, i, o, u, v, A, E, I, O, U, or V). Use v to signify an umlauted u (ü). This works for both lowercase and capital letters.
  • For example:
    • To type ā, press Ctrl+1, followed by a.
    • To type É, press Ctrl+2, followed by E.
    • To type ǚ, press Ctrl+3, followed by v.
    • To type ò, press Ctrl+4, followed by o.
  • All possible letters:
āēīōūǖ
áéíóúǘ
ǎěǐǒǔǚ
àèìòùǜ
ĀĒĪŌŪǕ
ÁÉÍÓÚǗ
ǍĚǏǑǓǙ
