User:Graham Chapman

I am a computer programmer from Sydney, Australia. I have a home page at http://patia.com/grahamc. It's a bit out of date, I've been a Unix system administrator for a while now.

I am not the Graham Chapman from Monty Python, he died many years ago. Nor am I related.

I have contributed some articles in various areas, but my main contribution is copyediting. Well, OK, I got sidetracked by European history a little...well, a lot really!

TODO Sometime

  • Sigismund von Herberstein check if Maximillian was a Roman emperor, not Austrian
  • re article on Muscovy and szopen's comments on the sweeping nature of the statement: "In 1648 most of Ukrainian society joined the Cossacks in a revolt because of the political, social, religious, and ethnic oppression suffered under Polish rule." Try and get some balance into this, either in the Muscovy article, or by additional articles on the state of affairs in other states/societies in the region at the time. More general problem is adding balance generally to avoid the classroom bias of single threads of history.
  • create ethnographer or maybe ethnography???
  • create Schloss Herberstein or maybe Herberstein Castle

TODO Soon

  • check out szopens concerns at talk:Kievan Rus'
  • check out Primary Chronicle extracts and intro for:
    • origin of the word Rus'
    • whether Rurik was invited or took over - sources are divided, and probably both views should be given. Also should highlight Viking origins.
    • related chronicles
  • write articles on indo european migrations into Russia and their effects, and on barbarian invasions. Most sources are copyright, so I'll have to write it. Perhaps also write one on paleolithic Russia.
  • write summary of Russion history for main page and try to tie together the threads from indo european migrations through to post-soviet Russia. Key points are:
    • indo european migrations; effects on language and culture
    • barbarian migrations - possible contribution to continuing Russian preoccupation with preventing invasions because of their geographic location on the East European plain unprotected from invasions from the east and south. Hence long Russian liking for buffer states. Also note effects of Mongol invasions shattered eastern civilisations in China and India, but if anything strengthened Russia and the rest of Europe.
    • slavs, and east slavs in particular, including derivation of English slave from slav because of widespread enslavement of Slavs by the Holy Roman Empire in the early middle ages (starting around 9th century).
    • Vikings and Rurik, possibly invited (according to Primary Chronicle) but in any event became first Grand Duke and formed or helped to form Kievan Rus'. Origin of word Rus. In fact the origins of the words Rus and Slav might be very significant for Russians.
    • Mongol invasion
    • Muscovy, Ivan the Great unifying force
    • Imperial Russia and Russian Empire, Peter the Great, Catherine the Great.
    • revolutionary movements leading to Soviet Empire
    • post-soviet Russia, CIS
  • write stub on Russian Empire mostly pointing to existing pages Imperial Russia and the Soviet Union
