The school's sports teams are called the Sooners, a nickname given to early Oklahoma land rush pioneers. They participate in the NCAA's Division I-A, and in the South Division of the Big Twelve Conference. The athletic program historically has been very successful since the end of World War II, including seven recognized College Football National Championships, the most recent in 2000. OU's largest athletic rivals are the University of Texas (inverted versions of their Longhorn mascot can be seen on automobiles all over the Norman campus, the annual college football game being known as the Red River Shootout) and Oklahoma State University (known as the "Bedlam Series"), with a historical rivalry in American Football with the University of Nebraska.

The campus newspaper is the Oklahoma Daily, produced daily during the fall and spring semesters and weekly during the summer semester.

OU is well known for its Meteorology, Petroleum Engineering, Law, Native American studies, History of Science, and Dance programs.
