Union City, Michigan

Union City is a village located mostly within Branch County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,804.

The village is located mostly within Union Township, where the Coldwater River flows into the St. Joseph River. Michigan State Highway 60 passes just north of the village. A small portion of the village lies within Burlington Township in Calhoun County.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²). 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.68% is water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,804 people, 685 households, and 474 families residing in the village. The population density is 473.8/km² (1,223.7/mi²). There are 734 housing units at an average density of 192.8/km² (497.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 95.90% White, 0.61% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.55% from other races, and 2.11% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 685 households out of which 36.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% are married couples living together, 13.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% are non-families. 25.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the village the population is spread out with 29.9% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.3 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $37,065, and the median income for a family is $43,984. Males have a median income of $32,143 versus $21,571 for females. The per capita income for the village is $15,101. 11.7% of the population and 7.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.9% of those under the age of 18 and 4.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
