Turner Fenton Secondary School is Canada's only campus-based high school, located in Brampton, Ontario. The prinicipal is Bob Garton. It operates under the Peel Board of Education.

As of September 2004, the school consisted of 757 first year students, 630 in their second year, 497 in their third, 418 in their fourth, and only 3 in their fifth. Of that, 143 students were in Extended French, and 200 took the bus.

Programming

Turner Fenton is by far the most diverse school in Peel, if not the Greater Toronto Area, by way of the variance of education programming it offers. Even without specializing in a distinct need or interest (ESL, hospitality, French), programs range across the board in terms of their educational structure. In all, one can easily identify eleven different levels of educational programming that students can study at.

  • English as a Second Language, English Learning Development
  • Extended French
  • Chef Training Program, dubbed "Recipe for Success", a dedicated hospitality/chef training program
  • Section 19, based out of the Cuthbert House (open Custody program for young male offenders) and Invictus (closed custody program for young female offenders, closing fall 2005)
  • Store Front, an alternate work-based program

The school also works with the William Osler Campus, a Peel Board facility for those admitted to hospital for terms longer than 14 days. Turner offers a Learning Strategies Course, and Specific Learning Disabilities services.

Sports, Clubs, and Traditions

Turner Fenton represents China, France, and Somalia at Model UN events. Turner Fenton actively places highly among schools fundraising for the Terry Fox Run; however, their totals ironically pale to its much smaller feeder school W. G. Davis Senior Public School.

In part due to the school's location, the OHL's Brampton Battalion hockey team members who have not yet completed high school are assigned to this school during the hockey season, returning to their home schools afterwards.

Athletic achievements

The Turner Fenton cross country team, winners of eleven straight ROPSSAA championships, pulled out another stellar performance October 25, 2003 at the Heart Lake Conservation Area. A solid showing that provincial OFSAA championships was highlighted by Santa hats for the Senior Boys team.

Turner Fenton Robotics Team

Turner Fenton sports a very involved robotics team, having participated in Canada and US FIRST competitions.

  • 2001 - 17th place
  • 2002 - 1st place, winner of the last SPAR Aerospace Award
  • 2003 - 13th place
  • 2004 - 4th place out of 75 teams at US First Robotics, eliminated in the quarter finals

History

Turner Fenton is home to an abandoned projection room, which not only provides a select few students with access to free promotional CDs from the mid-90s from its defunct radio station, but also stacks of soft drinks at the entrance, a few months past their expiry date.

The school was a part of a test project for the Peel Board, regarding the usage of ID lanyards. The card and lanyard combination was introduced in 2002, as an optional garment. However, by the time they were inforced in 2003, most students and faculty had had enough of the practice, even if initially for it. For example, a long-time senior-level English teacher decided to stick on the name "P.D. Playa", satirizing both the lanyard practice, and the aforementioned "basic" level students.
