Troupsburg, New York

Troupsburg is a town located in Steuben County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,126. The town is named after Robert Troup, a land agent.

The Town of Troupsburg is on the south border of the county.

History

The town was formed from the Towns of Canisteo and Addison in 1808.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 158.7 km² (61.3 mi²). 158.6 km² (61.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.02% is water.

The south town line is the border with Pennsylvania. The town is at higher elevation than other towns in the county.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,126 people, 380 households, and 283 families residing in the town. The population density is 7.1/km² (18.4/mi²). There are 497 housing units at an average density of 3.1/km² (8.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.87% White, 0.18% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.15% from other races, and 0.18% from two or more races. 1.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 380 households out of which 38.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.3% are non-families. 20.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.96 and the average family size is 3.46.

In the town the population is spread out with 32.8% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $30,714, and the median income for a family is $37,159. Males have a median income of $25,761 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the town is $11,982. 19.7% of the population and 14.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.3% of those under the age of 18 and 11.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • High Up -- A hamlet in the northeast corner of the town by Route 126.
  • South Troupsburg -- A hamlet in the southeast part of the town on Route 36.
  • Troupsburg -- The hamlet of Troupsburg, located in the center of the town on Route 36.
  • Troup Creek -- A stream flowing through the town trhough Clover Hollow and past Troupsburg village.
  • Young Hickory -- A location in the western part of the town on Route 117.
