Tribes Hill, New York

Tribes Hill is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in the Town of Mohawk in Montgomery County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the area had a total population of 1,024. The name is based on this location being a gathering spot for Native Americans.

Tribes Hill is in the eastern part of the town and is west of City of Amsterdam on Route 5.

Geography

The community is north of the Mohawk River.

Tribes Hill is located at 42°57'9" North, 74°17'26" West (42.952392, -74.290590)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 6.2 km² (2.4 mi²). 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.00% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,024 people, 417 households, and 303 families residing in the region. The population density is 173.4/km² (449.3/mi²). There are 436 housing units at an average density of 73.8/km² (191.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 96.78% White, 0.78% African American, 0.78% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 0.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 417 households out of which 27.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.0% are married couples living together, 10.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% are non-families. 24.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the community the population is spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 29.1% from 45 to 64, and 20.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 89.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.4 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $36,587, and the median income for a family is $39,750. Males have a median income of $35,000 versus $26,875 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $19,390. 7.4% of the population and 5.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.6% of those under the age of 18 and 11.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
