Torrey is a town located in Yates County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,307.

The Town of Torrey is in the northeast part of the county.

History

The town was formed in 1851, the last town created in the county.

Geography

The east town line, delineated by Seneca Lake is the border of Seneca County, New York, marked by Seneca Lake, one of the Finger Lakes.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 87.3 km² (33.7 mi²). 58.8 km² (22.7 mi²) of it is land and 28.5 km² (11.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 32.63% water.

The Keuka Lake Outlet flows from Keuka Lake to Seneca Lake.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,307 people, 477 households, and 361 families residing in the town. The population density is 22.2/km² (57.5/mi²). There are 696 housing units at an average density of 11.8/km² (30.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.93% White, 0.08% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.22% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 2.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 477 households out of which 28.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.6% are married couples living together, 6.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.3% are non-families. 19.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 21.8% from 25 to 44, 30.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 105.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $39,453, and the median income for a family is $40,350. Males have a median income of $31,625 versus $24,083 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,955. 12.0% of the population and 7.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.1% of those under the age of 18 and 5.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
