Toon Disney

Toon Disney is a cable channel that features mostly Disney cartoons. The network was launched on April 18, 1998.

Toon Disney, the spinoff of The Disney Channel, shows cartoons 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year (or at least it used to). It is (or was) similar to if you combined the Cartoon Network with The Disney Channel. A lot of old Disney cartoon shows appear including shows that used to be part of The Disney Afternoon.

There is also a Spanish language and United Kingdom version of Toon Disney. Starting on the 1 of August 2005 Toon Disney will also be available in Scandinavia.

This network is owned by Disney which also owns The Disney Channel and ABC.

List of programs broadcast by Toon Disney

As mentioned before, most of Toon Disney's programming has consisted of now-cancelled Disney Animation shows from the past, but Toon Disney has also shown some non-Disney cartoons, most of them produced by DiC Entertainment, which Disney owned at the time the network was launched. Among the shows Toon Disney has featured, past and present:

Animated movies (both Disney and non-Disney) have also been broadcast on the show every Friday and Saturday. As of November 2004, movies have been shown every weekday as well. It is unknown if the movie slot will return to just Fridays and Saturdays.

Programming Blocks

Over the course of Toon Disney's broadcast history, it has had several programming blocks that featured at least two of their shows.

A four-hour block called Magical World of Toons was added in 2000, and came on every night. It disappeared in 2003, where its slot was replaced by The Power Pack, which was a bunch of three-hour marathons of certain shows. It was brought back shortly afterward, but did not have its original look, nor was it even called Magical World of Toons anymore. More recently, though, it has been replaced by Jetix (see below).

Princess Power Hour also came in 2000, and is a one-hour block featuring episodes of Aladdin (the ones featuring Jasmine, at least) and The Little Mermaid. This block still exists today, and it airs every weekend afternoon.

Also added in 2000 was Chillin' with the Villains. Here, a two-hour marathon of a certain show was presented on Sunday afternoons. However, these particular marathons focused on a certain villain from whichever series was being featured. (Teamo Supremo was a bit of an exception, due to the fact that the show's villains weren't regulars.) This block was removed in 2004.

@Toon, a four-hour weekday-afternoon block similar in spirit to the original Disney Afternoon, came out in 2001. Before each first commercial break for each show, it featured some viewer submissions and game high scores from the official website. It was removed in 2004.

2002 brought forth Hangin' with the Heroes, which originally aired on weekends, but then aired on weekdays too. It featured Aladdin, Gargoyles, and Hercules: The Animated Series. But like the last two blocks listed, it was removed in 2004.

JETIX controversy

In February 2004, the JETIX block which already featured on ABC Family, was added to Toon Disney's weeknight schedule. It airs every night, replacing the block formerly reserved for Magical World of Toons. In addition to Gargoyles and The Legend of Tarzan, and new Disney series Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go!, it features these shows, most of which were formerly seen on Fox Kids:

Although fans of these shows are glad to be able to watch these shows in the evening (these shows appear in the morning time slot on ABC Family while they're at school), many Toon Disney fans are greatly upset by this new addition to Toon Disney's schedule, and consider the addition of JETIX to be the point where Toon Disney jumped the shark. Sometime after JETIX was added, most of the classic Disney shows that the network was meant for were removed. Prior to the addition of JETIX, The Wuzzles, Adventures of the Gummi Bears, Marsupilami, The Shnookums and Meat Funny Cartoon Show, and Jungle Cubs had disappeared. Toon Disney also does not show classic Disney shorts anymore. It is unknown if these shows will ever return on Toon Disney.
