Theresa is a village located in the Town of Theresa in Jefferson County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 812.

The Village of Theresa is located on Routes 26, 193, and 194.

History

The first business at this location was started in 1820 and a post office was established there in 1822. Theresa was incorporated as a village in 1871.

Geography

The Indian River flows past the east side of the village.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.4 km² (1.3 mi²). 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.79% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 812 people, 308 households, and 211 families residing in the village. The population density is 248.8/km² (642.4/mi²). There are 358 housing units at an average density of 109.7/km² (283.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 95.44% White, 2.34% Black or African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.23% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 308 households out of which 33.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% are non-families. 24.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the village the population is spread out with 28.8% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 110.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.2 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $38,125, and the median income for a family is $44,545. Males have a median income of $32,344 versus $22,250 for females. The per capita income for the village is $18,608. 14.3% of the population and 11.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.5% of those under the age of 18 and 3.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
