The Daily Cougar

The Daily Cougar is a daily newspaper run entirely by students at the University of Houston. Founded in 1934, The Daily Cougar publishes Monday through Friday during the school year, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the Summer, though it has run Mondays and Wednesdays in previous summers.
As of 2003, The Daily Cougar was Houston's second largest English-language daily newspaper, with a circulation approaching of nearly 12,000 and a readership approaching 40,000.
Until October 2003 the Cougar's newsroom, located in UH's Communications Building, was without a sofa. Since that time, it has been replaced, as the person who provided the old one had to take it back. The new one is smaller and doesn't match the lousy color scheme in the room.
During Tropical Storm Allison, the newsroom was severely damaged, yet the staff continued production of the newspaper as scheduled (on a summer schedule) in the cramped quarters of the business office, which sustained only minimal damage.
Columnists from all divisions (News, Opinion, Life and Arts, and Sports) have a tendency to become minor celebrities in the University of Houston community.
Various games have been invented in the newsroom, such as "Googly", which involved a 5-gallon water jug and a 4" ball. The search engine Google was not involved.
The Daily Cougar, with the exception of a syndicated crossword puzzle, contains 100 percent student produced content.
