Tavernier is a census-designated place and town located in Monroe County, Florida, on an island named Plantation Key in the Florida Keys. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,173.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²). 6.8 km² (2.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.32% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,173 people, 938 households, and 602 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 321.5/km² (832.1/mi²). There are 1,806 housing units at an average density of 267.2/km² (691.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 96.78% White, 0.83% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.78% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 19.51% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 938 households out of which 26.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.6% are married couples living together, 8.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.8% are non-families. 26.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.74.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 20.4% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 31.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 103.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $40,881, and the median income for a family is $46,141. Males have a median income of $30,221 versus $26,397 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $22,592. 9.9% of the population and 7.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.6% of those under the age of 18 and 8.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
