Tattoo You is an album by The Rolling Stones, released on 27 August, 1981. It was originally to be called Tattoo, and the name was changed without consulting Keith Richards, a sign of the state of the relationships amongst the band during the early 1980s.

Tattoo You is a collection of outtakes, some dating back almost a decade, and a few new songs, put together by engineer and associate producer Chris Kimsey so the Stones could have some product on the market for their September-December tour of the USA. It was remixed by Bob Clearmountain. Start Me Up — a five-year-old song — was released as the first single, and became the band's biggest hit since Miss You and one of their biggest ever. This pushed Tattoo You to sales estimated through 2000 to be eight million worldwide.

The province of the tracks: Waiting On A Friend and Tops were written in 1972 and recorded during that year's sessions in Jamaica for Goats Head Soup.

Black Limousine was written in 1973 (as Broken Head Blues), revived during the 1977 Some Girls sessions and then re-recorded during the 1979 Emotional Rescue sessions.

Start Me Up was written in 1976 (as Never Stop), attempted as a reggae song during the 1975 Black and Blue sessions and revived during the 1977 Some Girls sessions, before being rearranged and re-recorded during the 1979 Emotional Rescue sessions.

Slave and Worried About You were written and recorded during the 1975 Black and Blue sessions. Hang Fire was written in 1977, attempted at the 1977 Some Girls sessions and then re-recorded with new lyrics during the 1979 Emotional Rescue sessions.

Little T & A and No Use In Crying were written and recorded in 1979 during the Emotional Rescue sessions.

Neighbours and Heaven are new tracks, recorded at Atlantic Studios, New York, in May-June 1981.

Note that all tracks were subject to extensive remixing and some overdubbing, including Sonny Rollins' saxophone on Waiting On A Friend and Slave.

The original vinyl album was divided neatly into 'fast songs' and 'slow songs' sides.
