Tarrant County, Texas

Fort Worth is the largest city in Tarrant County. Its population in 2000 was 534,694. In 2003, the population had increased to 585,122. (Source: United States Census) Arlington was the second largest city in Tarrant County in 2000 when its population was 332,969.

Tarrant County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 1,446,219. Its county seat is Fort Worth6. Tarrant County is the second most populous county in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and contains its second largest principal city.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,324 km² (897 mi²). 2,236 km² (863 mi²) of it is land and 88 km² (34 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.80% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,446,219 people, 533,864 households, and 369,433 families residing in the county. The population density is 647/km² (1,675/mi²). There are 565,830 housing units at an average density of 253/km² (655/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 71.23% White, 12.80% Black or African American, 0.57% Native American, 3.64% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 9.09% from other races, and 2.51% from two or more races. 19.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 533,864 households out of which 36.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.60% are married couples living together, 12.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.80% are non-families. 24.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.22.

In the county, the population is spread out with 28.10% under the age of 18, 10.00% from 18 to 24, 33.50% from 25 to 44, 20.10% from 45 to 64, and 8.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 98.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $46,179, and the median income for a family is $54,068. Males have a median income of $38,486 versus $28,672 for females. The per capita income for the county is $22,548. 10.60% of the population and 8.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.80% of those under the age of 18 and 8.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
