Talk:Trickster

No notable Trickster figures in Judaic or Christian literature. That's quite revealing, but surely notNorwikian 20:52, 23 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I've heard several commentators claim that Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck are both modern incarnations of the trickster figure. Does anyone think this should be included in the article (or is it opening a floodgate?) -- Finlay McWalter 11:18, 21 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I just added Maui to the "Hawai`ian" section, without noticing that Maui was already listed in the "Polynesian" section. But it would seem that If both sections are to be present, then Hawai`ian should be a subcategory of Polynesian. No? -- Dominus 00:35, 16 Mar 2004 (UTC)

What about Hindu mythology? Don't I recall that Krishna was something of a trickster at least in childhood? rossb 11:24, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Various problems

There's a good deal of literature on the Trickster, none of which seems to have been read to compose this entry. (Terry Pratchett does not provide a secure starting point.) The entry needs work. In brief:

  • Animals associated with tricksters include coyotes, ravens, and foxes. This is not universally true. Statements like this are only useful within some context. Please identify the culture, perhaps expand to include other trickster animals and return to the entry.
  • Intellectual Prometheus was not turned into a prototype of an intellectual until the early 19th century, when the "trickster" figure was far from anyone's mind.
  • The Tarot is not often claimed to be a combination of the archetypes from all human mythologies except perhaps by storefront fake gypsies across from the bus station. The European Tarot represents the Trickster as the Fool card. No, the Fool is the simple primordial human at the mercy of the World, one of the few certain identifications in the Tarot.
  • Typically tricky, the Fool is numbered both higher and lower than all the other Major Arcana. Numbers are a recent addition to printed Tarot cards. The Fool retains his primordial unnumbered status. High and low numbers are more relevant to Canasta than Tarot.

How is the Jackalope a trickster? That'd be better classified as a hoax. And how do Hephaestos and Hermes Trismegistus qualify? --Tydaj 01:43, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Recommended reading Trickster Makes This World: Mischief, Myth, and Art, by Lewis Hyde. Well researched and readable. Add Picasso, John Cage and Dylan as modern tricksters too.--Jayqq 18:26, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)
