A most interesting piece. Mention should be made, I think, of the fact that French judges for many centuries have been known as "présidents du tribunal." If I remember correctly, in Choderlos de Laclos's Liaisons Dangereuses, one of the female characters marries a judge and is addressed as "la présidente", in the same manner than the wife of Mr. John Doe would have been known in English as Mrs. John Doe. I lack enough information to add this myself.
