FREE RADICALS

I'm not sure what the "discussion" part of wikipedia, but I have a suggestion for this page. I believe that there should be a mention about the Free Radical Theory of Aging (from here on FRTA) developed by Dr. Denham Harman. I see that there is a separate page for titled "Free Radical Theory" with basically two lines of text. Possibly that should be revamped, or a separate page for the FRTA should be added on the main Free Radical page.

If I was more educated about the topic, I would add the section myself, but unfortunately, I'm not. I also see that, especially in the Free Radical in Biology section, there is no mention of the current sceintific doubt of the damage free radicals can cause. I believe Dr. Harman believed that since our white blood cells had an oxygen free radical byproduct, that the same byproduct that was killing bacteria was destroying our cells. However, it seems as if enzymes from the white blood cells does the killing--which entirely casts doubt on the negative side effects of free radicals.

I will try to research the topic and write the section myself, however, since I don't have a science background, I don't think I'm the best person to do it.

I edited the FRTA article, I have a feeling that a lot of it would be copyrighted. As the quoted article stated though, the free radical theory of aging is widely accepted. It was the production of free radicals by the body to kill bacteria that was questioned. I have no doubt about the damaging nature of free radicals, even though a lot of the biochemical literature on this topic is "hand-wavy". Zwa 07:12, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
