I am one of the last generations of direct descendents to Governor Edward Kavanagh (Gov. 1843-44)and I am putting together a family tree and history beginning with the first Kavanagh immigrant to America, Edward's father, James who emigrated from County Wicklow, Ireland in 1794, first landing in Boston where the Irish were not particularly welcome so he and his childhood friend, Matthew Cottrill moved on to Newcaslte on the Damariscotta River,Maine where they first opened a mercantile and later a shipyard and the mills, two sawmills and one fulling mill.Thanks to Kavanagh and Cottrill, this nearly destitute, sleepy little town came alive and prospered. Andrew Jackson thanked them personally for sending their ships to the War of 1812. I have all the history for the family beginning with this first Kavanagh. Are you interested?
