According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 324 people, 157 households, and 88 families residing in the city. The population density is 338.1/km² (876.5/mi²). There are 195 housing units at an average density of 203.5/km² (527.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.91% White, 0.00% African American, 1.85% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.93% from other races, and 0.31% from two or more races. 1.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 157 households out of which 21.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% are married couples living together, 3.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.9% are non-families. 40.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 24.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.06 and the average family size is 2.82.
In the city the population is spread out with 21.0% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 27.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $27,188, and the median income for a family is $36,375. Males have a median income of $20,962 versus $16,250 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,684. 17.6% of the population and 13.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.4% of those under the age of 18 and 6.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
History
The History of the Sylvan Grove Public Library
The Library was organized in the fall of 1925 by the Tuesday Club. The first library was housed in a central room above the Sylvan State Bank. In 1938, the city took over the library and it was moved to a southeast corner room of the bank. In 1949, a fund-raiser was held to purchase several hundred books. On Dec,1 1956,the library was moved to its present lovation in City Hall.
