Surfside Beach, Texas

Surfside Beach is a city located in Brazoria County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 763. Its mayor is one Larry Davison, owner of the local surf shop Breaker Sports.

Surfside Beach is also the home of United States Congressman Ron Paul.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.8 km² (2.2 mi²). 4.6 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 20.09% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 763 people, 352 households, and 197 families residing in the city. The population density is 165.5/km² (427.7/mi²). There are 879 housing units at an average density of 190.7/km² (492.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.66% White, 1.97% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.26% Pacific Islander, 2.10% from other races, and 2.23% from two or more races. 3.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 352 households out of which 19.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.5% are married couples living together, 7.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.0% are non-families. 32.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.68.

In the city the population is spread out with 18.6% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 33.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 111.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 118.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $37,778, and the median income for a family is $43,333. Males have a median income of $30,556 versus $25,625 for females. The per capita income for the city is $24,081. 12.6% of the population and 10.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.1% of those under the age of 18 and 3.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
