Sunderland is a town located in Franklin County, Massachusetts, part of the Pioneer Valley. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,777.

History

Sunderland was first settled in 1713 and was officially incorporated in 1714.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 38.3 km² (14.8 mi²). 37.3 km² (14.4 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.77% water.

Sunderland is on east bank the Connecticut River.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,777 people, 1,633 households, and 765 families residing in the town. The population density is 101.3/km² (262.5/mi²). There are 1,668 housing units at an average density of 44.8/km² (115.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 88.77% White, 2.36% African American, 0.26% Native American, 6.43% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 1.06% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 2.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,633 households out of which 22.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.5% are married couples living together, 6.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 53.1% are non-families. 27.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the town the population is spread out with 18.2% under the age of 18, 21.6% from 18 to 24, 33.7% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 8.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $37,147, and the median income for a family is $53,021. Males have a median income of $36,779 versus $30,526 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,024. 14.0% of the population and 4.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.8% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Apartments

There are several apartment complexes in Sunderland, four of which are situated on a bus route that goes to the nearby University of Massachusetts, Amherst. As a result, many college students rent out apartments in the town.
