Sullivan County is a county located in the state of Indiana, and determined by the U.S. Census Bureau to include the mean center of U.S. population in 1940. As of 2000, the population is 21,751. The county's county seat is Sullivan, Indiana.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,176 km² (454 mi²). 1,158 km² (447 mi²) of it is land and 18 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.51% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 21,751 people, 7,819 households, and 5,574 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (49/mi²). There are 8,804 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (20/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.11% White, 4.27% Black or African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 0.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,819 households out of which 31.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.10% are married couples living together, 9.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.70% are non-families. 25.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.60% under the age of 18, 9.40% from 18 to 24, 30.50% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 14.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 115.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 116.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,976, and the median income for a family is $39,290. Males have a median income of $30,207 versus $20,790 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,234. 10.90% of the population and 8.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.40% of those under the age of 18 and 9.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
