Sullivan is a town located in Madison County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 14,991.

The Town of Sullivan is located in the northwest corner of the county.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 190.5 km² (73.6 mi²). 190.0 km² (73.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.27% water.

The northern border of the town is Oneida Lake.

The New York State Thruway passes across the town.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,991 people, 5,688 households, and 4,169 families residing in the town. The population density is 78.9/km² (204.3/mi²). There are 6,209 housing units at an average density of 32.7/km² (84.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.25% White, 0.33% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 0.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,688 households out of which 35.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.9% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% are non-families. 21.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $44,468, and the median income for a family is $50,262. Males have a median income of $36,587 versus $25,881 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,982. 7.0% of the population and 4.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.8% of those under the age of 18 and 7.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Eaton Corners -- A location south of Lakeport.
  • Fuller Settlement -- a hamlet in the northwest part of the town.
  • Geesville -- A location in the northeast part of the town.
  • Lake Oneida Beach West -- A lakeside hamlet on the shore of Oneida Lake.
  • Lakeport -- A hamlet on Oneida Lake and Route 31.
  • Messenger Bay -- A lakeside hamlet in the northeast corner of the town.
  • North Chittenango -- A hamlet south of the Thruway on Lakeport Road.
  • Peck Corner -- A location in the northwest part of the town at Routes 1 and 4.
  • Sullivan -- A hamlet east of Chittenango village on Route 5 and 13.
  • Weaver Corner -- A location near Chittenango Creek.
