2Pacalypse Now (1991) | Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z (1993) | Thug Life: Thug Life Vol. 1 (1994) |
Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z picks up right where 2Pacalpyse Now left off. Like his debut, this contains more of 2Pac's songs emphasizing his political and social thoughts. This album, however, saw more commercial success than his debut, and there are some differences in sound as well. Strictly is more hard-edged than his debut, with more intense production. Also, while the album has plenty of political and social content, this is more rugged and street. The album was released in February of 1993, and featured the hits "Keep Ya Head Up", "Papaz Song", and "I Get Around". The album eventually hit platinum status. Like almost all of 2Pac's albums, there are plenty of fans who argue that this is his "best" album.
Holler If You Hear Me has a pretty solid beat, and is probably more party-themed. I Get Around follows along the same lines, and is a throwback to 2Pac's Digital Underground roots. Papa'z Song is a woeful tale about 2Pac's lack of a father figure throughout most of his life.
The standout on this album is, arguably, Keep Ya Head Up. It is Shakur's most powerful tribute to single black women and his respect for them. His lyrics are soothing and powerful, I remember Marvin Gaye/ Used to sing to me/ He had me thinkin' black was the thing to be, as well as many eerily timely political messages, They got money for wars / but can't feed the poor.
