Steuben County is a county located in the state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 33,214. The county's county seat is Angola, Indiana6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 835 km² (322 mi²). 800 km² (309 mi²) of it is land and 36 km² (14 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.27% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 33,214 people, 12,738 households, and 8,916 families residing in the county. The population density is 42/km² (108/mi²). There are 17,337 housing units at an average density of 22/km² (56/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.19% White, 0.37% Black or African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.85% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 2.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,738 households out of which 32.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.00% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.00% are non-families. 24.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 10.40% from 18 to 24, 28.50% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 11.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 102.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $44,089, and the median income for a family is $50,567. Males have a median income of $35,300 versus $23,856 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,647. 6.70% of the population and 4.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.40% of those under the age of 18 and 7.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
