Steele is a city located in Kidder County, North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 761. It is the county seat of Kidder CountyTemplate:GR.
Geography
Steele is located at 46°51'22" North, 99°54'60" West (46.856066, -99.916606)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.
On July 6, 1936, the temperature in Steele soared to 121°F, the highest temperature ever recorded in the state of North Dakota. This event is even more remarkable in light of the fact that since 1948, the temperature has not exceeded 109°F. Never has such extreme heat been recorded so far north on the North American continent. A prolonged period of extreme drought across the entire Great Plains contributed to the extreme heat. Record high temperatures for 15 states fell that summer. In the United States, higher temperatures have been recorded in only four states: California, Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico. (Kansas set its own 121°F record on July 24.)

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 761 people, 336 households, and 191 families residing in the city. The population density is 515.5/km² (1,338.5/mi²). There are 367 housing units at an average density of 248.6/km² (645.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 99.61% White, 0.13% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 336 households out of which 23.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.6% are married couples living together, 6.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.9% are non-families. 40.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 28.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.13 and the average family size is 2.88.
In the city the population is spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 17.9% from 45 to 64, and 31.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 87.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.8 males.
