St. Paul, Alaska

Saint Paul is a city located in Aleutians West Census Area, Alaska. It is the main settlement of Saint Paul Island in the Pribilofs, a small island group in the Bering Sea. Saint Paul Island is well known as a birdwatching haven.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 765.4 km² (295.5 mi²). 104.4 km² (40.3 mi²) of it is land and 661.0 km² (255.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 86.36% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 532 people, 177 households, and 123 families residing in the city. The population density is 5.1/km² (13.2/mi²). There are 214 housing units at an average density of 2.0/km² (5.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 12.97% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 85.90% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.56% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 177 households out of which 38.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.1% are married couples living together, 22.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% are non-families. 24.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.88 and the average family size is 3.44.

In the city the population is spread out with 29.5% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 32.5% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 5.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 123.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 125.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $50,750, and the median income for a family is $51,750. Males have a median income of $32,583 versus $29,792 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,408. 11.9% of the population and 6.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.9% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
