St. Joseph Charter Township, Michigan

St. Joseph Charter Township is a township located in Berrien County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 10,042. The township is on the shores of Lake Michigan in the west central portion of the county, south of and adjacent to the City of St. Joseph. The Village of Shoreham, on Lake Michigan south of St. Joseph city, is the only incorporated community within the boundaries of the township. Both the village and township are bedroom communities for the city of St. Joseph.

The St. Joseph River flows through the township. Fair Plain is an unincorporated census-designated place that includes the portion of the township lying north of the St. Joseph River.

The township was one of the original divisions of Berrien County, and was organized in 1832.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 18.1 km² (7.0 mi²). 17.2 km² (6.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.30% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,042 people, 4,094 households, and 2,947 families residing in the township. The population density is 582.2/km² (1,507.1/mi²). There are 4,271 housing units at an average density of 247.6/km² (641.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 85.21% White, 11.47% African American, 0.32% Native American, 1.72% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,094 households out of which 29.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.5% are married couples living together, 7.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.0% are non-families. 24.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the township the population is spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 27.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.4 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $54,158, and the median income for a family is $60,743. Males have a median income of $49,410 versus $31,375 for females. The per capita income for the township is $28,095. 3.7% of the population and 2.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.2% of those under the age of 18 and 2.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
