Southport (town), New York

Southport is a town located in Chemung County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 11,185.

The Town of Southport was formed from the Town of Elmira in 1822. The town is located in the southwest corner of the county and is southwest of Elmira, New York.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 121.2 km² (46.8 mi²). 120.5 km² (46.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.62% water.

The south town line is the border of Pennsylvania and the west town line is the border of Steuben County, New York. The Chemung River forms part of the northern border.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 11,185 people, 4,189 households, and 2,890 families residing in the town. The population density is 92.8/km² (240.4/mi²). There are 4,353 housing units at an average density of 36.1/km² (93.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 90.55% White, 6.78% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.47% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 2.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,189 households out of which 28.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% are married couples living together, 10.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% are non-families. 26.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the town the population is spread out with 21.2% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 109.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 111.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $38,580, and the median income for a family is $44,232. Males have a median income of $32,144 versus $24,410 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,454. 11.7% of the population and 8.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.5% of those under the age of 18 and 4.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Communities and locations in Southport

  • Mount Zoar -- A prominent hill in the north part of the town.
  • Pine City -- A hamlet between Southport and Webb Mills on Route 328.
  • Rosstown -- A location south of Southport on Route 26.
  • Sagetown -- A location near the western town line on Route 32.
  • Seeley Creek -- (1) A stream that flows northward through the town to the Chemung River, (2) A location south of Webb Mills on Route 328. The name is that of an early settler family.
  • Southport -- A large hamlet in northeast part of the town and a suburb of Elmira.
  • Webb Mills -- A hamlet in the south central part of the town on Route 328.
