Southaven, a city located in DeSoto County, Mississippi, is a suburb of Memphis, Tennessee and one of the fastest growing areas of Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 28,977.

Geography

Southaven is located at 34°58'0" North, 89°59'14" West (34.966729, -89.987298)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 88.0 km² (34.0 mi²). 87.5 km² (33.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.52% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 28,977 people, 11,007 households, and 8,134 families residing in the city. The population density is 331.2/km² (857.9/mi²). There are 11,462 housing units at an average density of 131.0/km² (339.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 90.33% White, 6.65% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.13% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 2.26% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,007 households out of which 36.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.1% are married couples living together, 12.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.1% are non-families. 21.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 32.5% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 8.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $46,691, and the median income for a family is $52,333. Males have a median income of $36,671 versus $26,557 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,759. 6.7% of the population and 5.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.2% of those under the age of 18 and 6.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Other facts

Southaven was the boyhood home of noted novelist John Grisham who also practiced law there for almost a decade.
