Sonia, Sonic, and Manic

Sonic Underground is an animated series that follows the adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, and his siblings Sonia (his sister) and Manik (his brother). Sonia is a pink hedgehog, who wears a purple dress. Manik is a green hedgehog who is similar to Sonic in apperence beside the fact that he wears a red vest and his first two spines are replaced by spiky hair. It bared little continuity with the often convoluted Sonic universe - including previous animated series, and Sonic comics and games - and, apart from Sonic and Robotnik, few established characters. Despite having an original storyline & approach, it's considered by many as the worst of the three American Sonic cartoons.

Jaleel White provided the voices for all 3 siblings.

The three are the children of Queen Aleena Hedgehog who was the original queen of Mobius before Princess Sally's family ruled Mobius. They are chased by Doctor Robotnik and his bumbling bounty hunter sidekicks Sleet and Dingo. The reason that he is chasing the three is because of a prophecy made by the Oracle of Delphius (a spoof of the Oracle of Delphi of Ancient Greece) - saying that the Queen's three children will one day find their mother and together destroy Robotnik's reign and become the rulers again.

The three siblings have magical amulets that not only change into musical instruments but change into weapons when the triplets are in perfect harmony with each other. Sonic's amulet is an electric guitar/gun, Sonia's amulet is a keyboard/gun, and Manik's amulet is a drumset/Earth controller. The three use the amulets not only to fight Robotnik's forces but to also have instruments for their underground rock and roll band Sonic Underground.

Program History

During the run up to the launch of the Sega Dreamcast, Sega heavily advertised all their big products. For Sonic, they contacted DiC, who previously made both SatAM and AoStH, to make a new Sonic cartoon. Due to low popularity, Sonic Underground ran for only one season, 1998 to 1999. Since then, the show can now be found on UPN's weekday morning lineup. In New York UPN is on WWOR-TV and the show is on at 8:30 a.m.
