Something Wicked this Way Comes

The phrase "something wicked this way comes" originates in Act IV scene 1 of William Shakespeare's play Macbeth (where the wicked thing is Macbeth himself, by this point in the play a traitor and murderer). The speaker is the second witch, and the full line is "By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes." Like many phrases from Shakespeare, it is popular for titles (see also By the Pricking of My Thumbs).

  • Something Wicked This Way Comes (1962) is a novel by Ray Bradbury.
  • Something Wicked This Way Comes is a 1983 album by The Enid. The first Enid album to feature lyrics, written by drummer Chris North and sung in a mock-operatic style by founder and keyboardist Robert John Godfrey, it deals with the threat of nuclear warfare and the various ways in which people respond to it. The album has been released in three different CD versions, each with different bonus tracks.
  • Something Wicked This Way Comes is a 1983 movie based on the Bradbury novel, starring Jason Robards and Jonathan Pryce. Directed by Jack Clayton for Walt Disney Pictures, from a screenplay written by Bradbury himself, it is a beautiful picture that unfortunately suffered from offscreen conflicts of vision. Although the 1980s Disney company was trying to grow beyond "kiddie fare" and make more complex and mature PG-rated movies, they struggled against the creepy and sometimes gruesome nature of the chosen story. The result is a strangely toothless film far more evocative of nostalgic New England childhood, and the melancholy beauty of autumn, than the slow-growing horrors of obsession and regret detailed in the novel.
  • Something Wicked This Way Comes' is a song from the soundtrack of the 1997 film Lost Highway.
  • Something Wicked This Way Comes is a 1998 album by Iced Earth. It is also the name of the trilogy of songs on the same album, "Prophecy", "Birth of the Wicked" and "The Coming Curse".
  • Something Wicked This Way Comes is a 2002 album by The Herbaliser.
  • Something Wicked This Way Comes is a song written by John Williams for the film of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004). It is performed in the film by Hogwarts students singing in the school choir, and is based on the witches' dialogue in Macbeth. The song is more properly known as "Double Trouble," its name on the movie's soundtrack CD.
  • Something Wal-Mart This Way Comes is an episode of South Park which deals with a Wall-Mart built in South Park, and the people becoming addicted to it.
