Shorewood-Tower Hills-Harbert, Michigan

Shorewood-Tower Hills-Harbert is a cluster of unincorporated communities located in Berrien County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is a Census-designated place (CDP) used for statistical purposes. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,619. The CDP is limited to Chikaming Township, although some of the communities extend into southern Lake Charter Township.

All of the communities are located either upon or just east of the dunes on the shore of Lake Michigan. Most of the communities lie west of Interstate 94, although the CDP includes a small area east of the interstate up to Sawyer.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 11.8 km² (4.6 mi²). 11.8 km² (4.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.44% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,619 people, 725 households, and 484 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 137.7/km² (356.9/mi²). There are 1,519 housing units at an average density of 129.2/km² (334.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 97.10% White, 0.86% Black or African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 1.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 725 households out of which 23.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.8% are married couples living together, 6.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% are non-families. 29.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.73.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 21.1% under the age of 18, 4.1% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 27.5% from 45 to 64, and 24.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $47,708, and the median income for a family is $52,917. Males have a median income of $44,402 versus $25,057 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $36,219. 4.5% of the population and 2.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.8% of those under the age of 18 and 3.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
