Template:GBthumb Shipley is a town in the county of West Yorkshire, England, by the River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, north of Bradford and close to Saltaire. It is within Bradford's city boundaries, but well outside of the core urban area.
At Shipley Glen there is a historic tramway, now restored.
Lately Shipley has become a gourmand's Aladdins cave, with very limited local shopping facilities and good road and rail links to both Leeds & Bradford its core business sector seems to be evolving into an entirely food service-led industry. For such a small town there is a great variety of pubs and restaurants, delivering Cantonese, Thai, Chinese, Indian, Spanish, Italian, and Mediterranean meals to satiate most pallets along with a burgeoning crop of good quality pub grub from the likes of Wetherspoons.
This in all honesty is probably due to the massive influx of new money into the area brought by trendy well salaried commuters who work in Leeds. Over the past few years development and gentrification of area's of the Aire Valley conurbation have created more demand for the type of services detailed above. As a result house prices have also seen a substantial rise, in some areas having even doubled.
Shipley also has a great heritage in the village of Saltaire that was designed and built to house the industrialist Titus Salt's worksforce. Salt built his mill on the edge of the Leeds to Liverpool Ship Canal and was involved heavily in the Worsted Wool Spinning business. Salt's mill still stands today and is home to PACE Microelectronics Systems and the Artist David Hockney's 1853 Gallery which houses some of his artwork and photography. There is also a high class designer homeware shop on the 2nd floor selling Alessi kitchenware and Designer Furniture from the likes of Phillipe Starck
