Shelter Island Heights, New York

Shelter Island Heights is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 981.

Shelter Island Heights is in the Town of Shelter Island. The community is located on the north side of the island of Shelter Island, west of the Village of Dering Harbor.

Geography

Shelter Island Heights is located at 41°4'41" North, 72°21'3" West (41.078150, -72.350936)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 14.6 km² (5.6 mi²). 13.9 km² (5.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.97% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 981 people, 459 households, and 302 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 70.7/km² (183.1/mi²). There are 1,374 housing units at an average density of 99.0/km² (256.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 98.17% White, 0.31% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. 1.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 459 households out of which 16.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% are married couples living together, 5.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% are non-families. 29.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.14 and the average family size is 2.62.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 14.9% under the age of 18, 3.1% from 18 to 24, 14.3% from 25 to 44, 31.9% from 45 to 64, and 35.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 56 years. For every 100 females there are 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $65,446, and the median income for a family is $76,162. Males have a median income of $46,750 versus $37,955 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $34,083. 6.2% of the population and 4.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.6% of those under the age of 18 and 2.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
