Sheldon is a town located in Wyoming County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,561.
The Town of Sheldon was incorporated in 1808. Sheldon is on the west border of Wyoming County.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 122.7 km² (47.4 mi²). 122.6 km² (47.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.06% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,561 people, 916 households, and 707 families residing in the town. The population density is 20.9/km² (54.1/mi²). There are 973 housing units at an average density of 7.9/km² (20.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.61% White, 0.04% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.12% from two or more races. 0.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 916 households out of which 35.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.5% are married couples living together, 7.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.8% are non-families. 18.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
