Seward is a town located in Schoharie County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,637.

History

The town was formed in 1840 from part of the Town of Sharon. The first settlement occurred around 1754.

Geography

The west town line is the border of Otsego County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.4 km² (36.5 mi²). 94.2 km² (36.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.19% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,637 people, 588 households, and 449 families residing in the town. The population density is 17.4/km² (45.0/mi²). There are 683 housing units at an average density of 7.2/km² (18.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.50% White, 0.31% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. 2.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 588 households out of which 40.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.1% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.6% are non-families. 19.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.78 and the average family size is 3.16.

In the town the population is spread out with 29.6% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 102.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $40,438, and the median income for a family is $44,813. Males have a median income of $31,827 versus $24,076 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,227. 8.8% of the population and 5.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.4% of those under the age of 18 and 3.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Dorloo -- A hamlet in the west part of the town on Route 165.
  • Gardnerville -- A hamlet east of Seward village, named after Dow Garner.
  • Hyndsville -- A hamlet on Route 10 in the southeast part of the town named after a settler family.
  • Janesville -- A hamlet on Route 10 in the southeast part of the town.
  • Lawyersville -- A hamlet on the east town line.
  • Seward -- The hamlet of Seward.
  • Webers Corners -- A hamlet by the west town line on Route 165.
  • Zeh Corners -- A hamlet in the northeast part of the town.
