Sergei Lavrov

Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov, in Russian Сергей Викторович Лавров, is the minister of foreign affairs of the Russian Federation. He succeeded Igor Ivanov on the post.
Lavrov was born on March 21, 1950, in Moscow. In 1972, he graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, and was sent as a Russian diplomat to Sri Lanka.
In 1988, Lavrov was sent as a senior adviser to the Soviet Union mission at the UN in New York City, where he got resent, this time in 1994 as the Russian permanent representative to the UN. His statements, particularly in the Security council, have been followed with great attention.
Lavrov speaks, apart from his native Russian, English, French and Sinhala, which he learned during his time in Sri Lanka. He is a passionate guitar player, writes poetry and enjoys rafting.
