Sardinia, New York

Sardinia is a town located in Erie County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,692.

The Town of Sardinia lies in the southeast corner of Erie County and is considered one of the county's "Southtowns."

History

This area of the county was first settled around 1809. The Town of Sardinia was incorporated in 1821 from the Town of Concord.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 130.5 km² (50.4 mi²). 130.0 km² (50.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.34% water.

The south town line is defined by Cattaraugus Creek and is the border of Cattaraugus County, New York. The east town line is the border of Wyoming County, New York.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,692 people, 944 households, and 731 families residing in the town. The population density is 20.7/km² (53.6/mi²). There are 1,017 housing units at an average density of 7.8/km² (20.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.59% White, 0.33% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 0.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 944 households out of which 36.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.5% are married couples living together, 6.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.5% are non-families. 17.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.85 and the average family size is 3.21.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 100.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $41,025, and the median income for a family is $45,556. Males have a median income of $32,333 versus $20,923 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,803. 7.8% of the population and 4.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.1% of those under the age of 18 and 14.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Chaffee -- A hamlet by the east town line on Route 16.
  • Johnson Corners -- A location formed by the intersection of Allen and Savage Roads.
  • Protection -- A location on the northern town line which was once a small community in the town.
  • Sardinia -- The hamlet of Sardinia in the south part of the town on Route 39.
  • Scott Corners -- A location formed by the intersection of Genesse and Warner Gulf Roads.
  • Shepards Corners -- A location formed by the intersection of Allen and Warner Gulf Roads.
