Salient (magazine)

Salient is the name of the weekly student magazine at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Salient was established in 1941. It was originally published in newspaper format, but has lately become a magazine. Salient's style and editorial position can change from year to year due to changes in editors. However, the magazine has generally taken a left-wing stance.
As of 2005, the magazine is being edited by Emily Braunstein, who was its theatre editor in 2004, under the previous editor Sarah Barnett.
Pseudonyms have become very prominent in Salient as columnists and letter-writers. Current columnists include Critical Critic, Emilie le Strange and Lemon Cohen.
Following complaints from various sources the letters pages are now censored. Previous letters published had been highly offensive as letter writers are able to remain anonymous.

Critical Critic is a pseudonym. Critical Critic writes in Salient, the Victoria University of Wellington students magazine.
Critical Critic began writing in the letters page in 2004, but in 2005 he 'sold out' to become a columnist. His column is called "Modern Life". His columns are in a similar style to his letters, generally filled with random abuse and bad language. Sometimes he is making a serious point about (for instance) the hypocrisy of a certain group, but often he is simply abusing things that annoy him.
His career has followed the pattern of Yule Sukmeov, another pseudonym who wrote letters filled with profanity and insulting first years in to Salient or a year (2003) until he was given his own column in 2004.
