St. Albans is a town located in Franklin County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,086. St. Albans completely surrounds St. Albans City, which is incorporated separately from the town of St. Albans.

St. Albans is on the shore of Lake Champlain. It was the site of the northernmost battle of the American Civil War. Gunfire and robbery caused terror when Confederate soldiers rode in from the north. Featuring events honoring maple syrup, the Vermont Maple Festival is held in St. Albans each year.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 156.8 km² (60.6 mi²). 97.3 km² (37.6 mi²) of it is land and 59.6 km² (23.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 37.98% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,086 people, 1,836 households, and 1,404 families residing in the town. The population density is 52.3/km² (135.4/mi²). There are 2,257 housing units at an average density of 23.2/km² (60.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.95% White, 0.39% Black or African American, 0.75% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 1.42% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,836 households out of which 38.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.6% are married couples living together, 11.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.5% are non-families. 18.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $46,875, and the median income for a family is $53,147. Males have a median income of $34,698 versus $26,000 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,604. 5.8% of the population and 7.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.1% of those under the age of 18 and 4.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
