Royal Oak Charter Township is a charter township located in Oakland County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 5,446. The nearby city of Royal Oak is legally separate from the township.
The township consists of two small non-contiguous parcels of land within Oakland County. The larger portion lies along 8 Mile Road, adjacent to Detroit, Oak Park, and Ferndale. The smaller portion is located northwest of the other portion, adjoining Oak Park and Southfield.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²). 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,446 people, 2,511 households, and 1,293 families residing in the township. The population density is 3,092.2/km² (8,055.8/mi²). There are 2,595 housing units at an average density of 1,473.4/km² (3,838.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 22.73% White, 71.50% African American, 0.22% Native American, 1.45% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.72% from other races, and 3.34% from two or more races. 1.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,511 households out of which 25.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 21.1% are married couples living together, 26.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 48.5% are non-families. 44.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 3.02.
In the township the population is spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 78.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 72.2 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $23,710, and the median income for a family is $28,397. Males have a median income of $28,824 versus $26,382 for females. The per capita income for the township is $15,027. 23.5% of the population and 19.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.8% of those under the age of 18 and 30.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
